Memphis Tigers Betting Preview
Outside of a rough stretch in December, Memphis has been a highly consistent team so far this year. They’re yet to lose consecutive games. The Tigers beat Missouri, UNLV, Ohio, San Francisco, UConn, and Michigan State in their first six games, then fell to Auburn and Arkansas State (around a win over LA Tech) in the next trio. After wins over Clemson and Virginia, Memphis took another loss to Mississippi State. Victories over Ole Miss, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, and East Carolina ensued, then a loss to Temple which gave the Tigers a 13-4 overall record through the first 17 games of the season so far.
In the Temple game on Thursday, the Tigers entered the second half with a 36-30 deficit. Memphis didn’t end up getting any closer than that on a 52-51 run and eventually lost 88-81 in the end. Leading team scorer PJ Haggerty put up 21 points with four assists and three steals, while Tyrese Hunter added 16 points with six assists, two steals, and two rebounds. Dain Dainja came off the bench for 14 points, five rebounds, two blocks and two assists in 22 minutes of work, and Nicholas Jourdain also finished in double-figures with 11 points and three boards.
Charlotte 49ers Betting Preview
Over on the Charlotte side, they came out of the gate this year with a spotty run through the first dozen games, and things have taken a major slide since then. The 49ers managed a 7-5 record through those first 12 outings. Charlotte beat Presbyterian, Richmond, Gardner-Webb, Livingstone, Georgia State, West Georgia, and Murray State in that time. The losses otherwise were versus Utah State, Long Island U, East Tennessee State, Davidson, and Hawaii. Since then Charlotte has been on a six-game skid. The losses in that time were versus Charleston, Tulane, Rice, Florida Atlantic, Tulsa, and Wichita State for a 7-11 overall record this year.
In the Wichita State matchup back on Tuesday, the 49ers held a four-point deficit 31-27 by the break. Charlotte was further left behind on a 37-32 second half and lost it 68-59 in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Nik Graves with 13 points, three rebounds, and two assists. Giancarlo Rosado added 11 points with eight rebounds, four assists, and five turnovers. Topping the bench contributors with eight points in 18 minutes was Rich Rolf.
Why the Charlotte 49ers will win
- Memphis has lost each of its last four road day games against Conference opponents.
- Charlotte has won four of its last five day games following a road loss.
- The home team has won the first half in each of Memphis’ last three games.
Why the Memphis Tigers will win
- Charlotte has lost each of its last six games against the American Athletic Conference.
- Memphis has won four of its last five games.
- Memphis has won the first half in four of its last five day games.
Memphis vs Charlotte Prediction
I’ll stick with Memphis. The Tigers have lost to a few teams that they probably shouldn’t have this year, including their latest matchup versus Temple. Memphis missed 10 of their 31 free throws (67.7 percent) in that one and got blitzed on the boards 49-25 (22-10 offensive) which spurred the defeat. Otherwise, the Tigers didn’t play terribly in the stat columns. Memphis has scored 68 or more points in five straight games (a 4-1 run), and they’ll likely hit that threshold again here as they try to assert some dominance in a game they should own.
As for Charlotte, they’ve given up 68 or more points in each installment of this current six-game losing streak while posting fewer than 69 points in five straight games themselves. I like Memphis to come into this one angry following their loss to Temple and completely dominate this game.
