Long Beach State Beach Betting Preview

Things were looking good for Long Beach State a couple of years ago after bagging a Big West title on the way to a 21-15 overall season. In the 2024-25 campaign however, the Beach fell back to earth with a 7-25 overall run. Long Beach State would go just 3-17 in the Big West, finishing ahead of only Cal Sate Fullerton in the standings. After an eight-game losing streak early in the year, the Beach seemed to have found their footing with a five-game win streak in December. LBSU would get just one win after that though (over UC Davis on the road), skidding into the finish line on a 15-game losing stretch.

This year Long Beach State has comparatively modest expectations in head coach Chris Acker’s second season. It’s truly a rebuilding phase, as he’ll retain just one player from last year’s squad in Derrick Michael Xzavierro. Among the 14 new faces are some intriguing additions, including Isaiah Lewis (9.4 PPG at Little Rock) and Shaq Bender (11.2 PPG at Manhattan). If that pair can take a step forward this season the Beach will be in good shape with their guard play.

San Diego State Aztecs Betting Preview

Over on the San Diego State side, they look a bit of a step back last season as well but were still competitive. The Aztecs posted a 21-10 overall run (after a 26-11 record in 2023-24) and a 14-6 finish in the Mountain West. That effort would give San Diego State a fourth-place finish in the standings behind New Mexico, Colorado State and Utah State. The Aztecs were a highly consistent team in the regular season and didn’t lose consecutive games. That said, San Diego State fell to Boise State in the first outing of the conference tournament then lost to North Carolina in the First Four matchup of the NCAA Tournament.

This season the Aztecs get Brian Dutcher back for his ninth year as head coach. He’ll have three returning starters from last season’s group, and six of nine returning regular rotation players. Reese Waters (returning from injury) will pair up with junior Miles Byrd (12.3 PPG) to headline the backcourt this season.

I’m probably just going to stay with the Aztecs. San Diego State has a pretty tricky schedule in the early-going this year, so we should be able to see what this team is all about from right off the bat. Looming are difficult games versus Michigan and Oregon, but first the Aztecs need a good showing here in the opener. I think they’ll get it.

As for the Beach, they’re mired in a rebuilding year after a nearly-full exodus of the roster from last season’s disappointing campaign. Long Beach State will take a handful of games to really see what they’ve got among this new group, but if all goes well things will be looking up. It won’t be an overly competitive team, but it shouldn’t be too much to ask that this group will take a big step forward.
