Kansas Jayhawks Betting Preview

The Jayhawks have been on a pretty choppy stretch since mid-January amid some tough matchups, but overall they’re not doing too badly. Kansas opened with seven straight wins, then hit a 2-3 stretch that included losses to Creighton, Missouri, and West Virginia amid wins over NC State and Brown. A 5-1 run came next with wins over UCF, Arizona State, Cincinnati, Kansas State, and TCU alongside a loss to Iowa State. Since then it’s been a 3-3 run with wins over UCF, Iowa State, and Colorado amid wins versus UCF, Iowa State, and Colorado. That gives the Jayhawks a 17-7 overall run through their first 24 outings of the year.

In the Colorado game on Tuesday, the Jayhawks took a 40-26 advantage into the second half. Kansas scored another 31 points from there on the way to a win 71-59. Hunter Dickinson was the team’s leading scorer on 19 points with nine rebounds. Zeke Mayo added 13 points with nine rebounds, five assists, and a pair of steals. Tops off the bench was David Coit with eight points and one rebound in 17 minutes of workout on the court.

Utah Utes Betting Preview

Over on the Utah side, they came into the year on a nice run but it’s been spotty in the record books since mid-December. The Utes opened with eight wins in 10 games, falling to only Mississippi State and Saint Mary’s in that time. Utah would then lose to Iowa, Baylor, Texas Tech, and Iowa State before wins over Oklahoma State, TCU, and BYU. It’s been a 2-5 run since then with a pair of wins over only Cincinnati and Colorado. Otherwise, Utah has racked up losses to Houston, Baylor, Oklahoma State, West Virginia, and Cincinnati in that time. In total, the Utes have managed a 13-11 overall run through their first 24 outings of the year.

Matched up against Cincinnati in the Tuesday game, the Utes went into the second half with a six-point deficit. Utah was outpaced 43-39 the rest of the way, failing to gain any ground in an 85-75 loss in the end. Gabe Madsen was the team’s leading scorer in the losing effort, totaling 28 points with two rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block. The only other player on the team to reach double-figures was Lawson Lovering with 14 points, three rebounds, and four assists in 27 minutes of work.

Why the Utah Utes will win

  • Utah has won 20 of its last 22 night games at Jon M. Huntsman Center.
  • Kansas has lost three of its last four road games against the Big 12 Conference.
  • Kansas has lost the first half in eight of its last 10 road games against Conference opponents.

Why the Kansas Jayhawks will win

  • Utah has lost 13 of its last 14 night games against AP-ranked opponents.
  • Kansas has won each of its last four night games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
  • Kansas has won the first half in eight of its last nine Saturday night games against Conference opponents.

Total Points Facts

  • Each of Utah’s last five games against Conference opponents at Jon M. Huntsman Center have produced a total of 145 or fewer points.
  • Each of Kansas’ last four road night games against the Big 12 Conference have produced a total of 145 or fewer points.

Kansas vs Utah Prediction

I’m staying with Kansas. The Jayhawks put together a nice effort at home versus a struggling Colorado team in their last outing, hitting 46.6 percent from the field with a 39-33 rebounding edge and only eight turnovers in the 12-point win. Kansas held the Buffaloes to just 38.6 percent shooting on the other side as well. Even during this fairly choppy recent run, Kansas is still scoring well. They’ve hit 69 or more points in eight straight games—a 5-3 stretch.

As for Utah, they’ve scored fairly well themselves lately with 69 or more points in four of the last five games. The Utes have given up 72 or more points in each of their last four losses however, so Kansas should have plenty of opportunities to score in this one.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Kansas Jayhawks -8.5
