The Jaguars have had a tough year so far—to say the least—with only one or two brief runs of quality play. IUPUI opened on a 2-5 skid, taking losses to Xavier, Eastern Michigan, Iowa State, Coastal Carolina, and South Carolina State alongside wins over IU Columbus and Goshen. A three-game win streak came next over Alabama A&M, Trinity Christian IL, and Green Bay, then a rough losing stretch. The Jaguars fell to Northern Kentucky, Fort Wayne, Lindenwood, Florida International, Milwaukee, Youngstown State, and Cleveland State at that time. IUPUI would break the cycle with a victory over Detroit though, leaving them with a 6-12 record so far.

In the Detroit matchup last Thursday, the Jaguars hit a nice 45-29 run in the first half. IUPUI would finish off on a 50-32 run for a 95-61 blowout victory. All five starters finished in double-figures, including team leader Jarvis Walker with 20 points, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Sean Craig added 19 points with seven assists and five boards, while DeSean Goode managed 15 points with 13 rebounds and three assists for a double-double.

Over on the Oakland side, they came out of the gate with a spotty run and haven’t been able to find their form since then. The Grizzlies went 3-4 in their first seven games, losing to Boise State, Illinois, Kansas, and Eastern Michigan in that time alongside wins over Defiance, Toledo, and Wright State. Since then it’s been a 3-8 stretch with wins over Loyola, Milwaukee, and Northern Kentucky. The losses otherwise have come versus Youngstown State, Michigan State, Cleveland State, Oregon State, Hawaii, Arkansas, Robert Morris, and Wright State for a 6-12 record on the season for the Golden Grizzlies as well.

Matched up against Northern Kentucky over the weekend, the Grizzlies came out of the break sporting a 41-32 edge. Oakland hit a 27-21 run the rest of the way and took the eventual win 68-53 in the end. DQ Cole led the team on his 16 points with five rebounds, and Tuburu Naivalurua added 15 points with nine boards on a near double-double. Allen Mukeba put up eight points with a team-high 12 boards in 35 minutes of action as well.

I’m likely going to try Oakland here. Granted, there’s not much to get excited about in this matchup but it should at least be competitive with both teams coming off much-needed victories. Oakland shot a tepid 41.4 percent with 13 turnovers against a middling Northern Kentucky team in their latest game but did well from the line (11-of-12) and had a nice 42-27 rebounding edge. The Grizzlies have 68 or more points in two of the last three outings, which is promising.

As for IUPUI, they played one of their best games of the season against Detroit in their last outing. The Jags shot 45.5 percent from the field with 37 rebounds and only seven turnovers in the blowout win. IUPUI had posted just 122 combined points over the previous two games, so it’d be nice to see them notch another nice total here. In the end, however, I like Oakland to power one out.
