Detroit began their 2024-25 campaign with a 3-2 run, taking out Cleary, Niagara, and Ball State among losses to Loyola IL and Toledo otherwise. Since then the Titans have lost three straight to Wake Forest, Tulsa, and Rhode Island.

Matched up against the Lumberjacks on Tuesday, the Eagles jumped out to a 37-23 halftime lead. Eastern Michigan was outscored 45-35 from there but held on for the 72-68 victory. Da’Sean Nelson led the team on 20 points with seven boards.

I’ll stick with Eastern Michigan. The Eagles didn’t finish strong against Northern Arizona in their last outing, eventually shooting just 5-of-20 (25 percent) from 3-point range and 19-of-28 (67.9 percent) from the line with a 46-31 rebounding deficit. To their credit, however, EMU had just eight turnovers and did a pretty good job on defense overall. That makes 68 or more points in every win so far for the Eagles, and 63 or fewer in the two losses. 

As for Detroit, they couldn’t overcome a slow start versus Rhode Island and lost their third in a row. The good news is that the Titans finally showed some life offensively after consecutive games with a combined 101 points. It won’t be easy to maintain that sort of intensity on the road on Saturday, so I like EMU to take the cover.
