Denver Pioneers Betting Preview
The Pioneers managed a middling run through their first 12 games of the season, but since then they’ve hit the skids hard on a major losing streak. Denver beat Western Colorado, Colorado Christian, Montana State, Sac State, Portland State, and Colorado Springs with losses to Stanford, Colorado State, Montana, CSU Northridge, Utah Tech, and Portland during that 6-6 opening stretch. Since then it’s been a string of losses to CSU Fullerton, Cal Poly, Northern Colorado, South Dakota State, South Dakota, North Dakota, North Dakota State, and Omaha for a rough 6-14 overall record through the first 20 games of the year so far.
Matched up against Omaha in their Wednesday game, the Pioneers entered the locker room with a 36-28 deficit. Denver was outscored 44-34 the rest of the way in an eventual loss of 80-62 in the end. Tops in scoring among starters in the defeat was Sebastian Akins with 16 points and four assists. Josh Pickett added 16 points with two rebounds, and Abdulai Fanta Kabba chipped in with 10 points, eight rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.
St. Thomas MN Tommies Betting Preview
Over on the Tommies’ side, they opened the year on a middling .500 stretch as well, but they’ve looked much better since late November. St. Thomas MN fell to Oklahoma State, Arizona State, Wofford, and Milwaukee during a tepid 4-4 run over their first eight outings. Since then it’s been a nice 10-1 win streak with a lone loss to UC Riverside in OT. Otherwise, the wins have been over Chicago State, Northern Colorado, Montana, Western Michigan, Crown College, Bowling Green, North Dakota State, North Dakota, South Dakota State, and South Dakota. The result has been a 14-5 run so far through 19 games this season.
In the South Dakota matchup last weekend, the Tommies held a 60-51 edge by the break. St. Thomas MN scored another 59 points from there in a high-flying victory 119-104. All five starters finished in double-figures, including Miles Barnstable with 28 points and four boards. Kendall Blue added 17 points with three rebounds and two assists, while Drake Dobbs put up 16 points and nine assists. Carter Bjerke chipped in 16 points with five boards as well.
Why the St. Thomas Tommies will win

- Denver has lost each of its last eight games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
- St. Thomas (MN) has won the first half in nine of its last 10 games at Schoenecker Arena.
Denver vs St. Thomas MN Prediction
I’ll stick with the Tommies. St. Thomas MN is on quite a run these days, and they’ll carry a lot of momentum into the weekend. The Tommies notched an excellent 56.5 percent shooting from the field and 35-of-41 (85.4 percent) from the line in a high-energy win over South Dakota last weekend, but did give up quite a bit of offense on the other side. Still, that makes 73 or more points in 11 straight games for St. Thomas MN, a 10-1 overall stretch.
As for Denver, they were pretty permissive with Omaha in their latest loss, giving up 53.1 percent shooting with a 33-26 rebounding deficit. The Pioneers have given up 69 or more points in nine straight games (a 1-8 span), so St. Thomas MN should have plenty of room to score in this one. I like the Tommies to stretch their legs and cover in the end.
