Penn Quakers Betting Preview

Penn has only had a couple of consecutive wins so far this year. Otherwise, the victories have been few and far between. In their opening 4-7 run, the Quakers fell versus Lafayette, Saint Joseph’s, Villanova, Navy, Elon, Drexel, and VCU. Since then it’s been a rough 2-7 stretch for Penn. Those two victories came in succession versus Harvard and Columbia. Otherwise, it was defeats courtesy of George Mason, Penn State, Dartmouth, Cornell, Brown, Yale, and Princeton in that time, giving the Quakers a 6-14 overall run through 20 games so far.

In the Princeton matchup last Friday, the Quakers were down by seven points at the break. Penn got better from there on a 35-30 advantage but ended up taking the loss at the end 61-59. Nick Spinoso posted 12 points with five rebounds and one assist in 23 minutes of work during the defeat. Sam Brown also had 12 points with three assists, three steals, and four rebounds in his 40 minutes out on the court.

Yale Bulldogs Betting Preview

Over on the Yale side, they managed a .500 run through their first 12 games but it’s been all wins since the new calendar year flipped over. The Bulldogs lost to UIC, Purdue, Minnesota, Delaware, Rhode Island, and UTEP during that 6-6 opening stretch. The wins were over Quinnipiac, Emerson, Stony Brook, Fairfield, Vermont, and Akron otherwise. Since that, Yale has dispatched Howard, Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, Penn, and Cornell in succession. That gives the Bulldogs a 14-6 overall record through 20 games this year.

In the Cornell matchup last weekend, the Bulldogs came out of the locker room sporting a 54-44 advantage. Yale hit a 49-44 run the rest of the way and took the eventual win 103-88 in the end. John Poulakidas was the top team scorer with 32 points, three boards, and two assists. Nick Townsend added 25 points with six rebounds and five assists in 32 minutes, and Bez Mbeng tripled up on 15 points with 10 rebounds, 12 assists, and five steals.

Why the Yale Bulldogs will win

  • Yale has won each of its last 10 home night games against the Ivy League.
  • Penn has lost each of its last seven games against the Ivy League at John J. Lee Amphitheater.
  • Penn has lost the first half in seven of its last eight night games.

Why the Penn Quakers will win

  • The road team has won each of Yale's last three games.
  • Yale has lost three of its last four night games against non-AP-ranked opponents.

Penn vs Yale Prediction

I’ll stay with Yale but the line's too thick to mess with. The Bulldogs are on a nice run right now and coming off a solid win over a decent Cornell team in a road matchup. Yale posted a nice 62.5 percent shooting in that one but did have 11 turnovers for 19 Big Red points. The Bulldogs are scoring great these days. They’ve hit 74 or more points in 10 straight games, going 9-1 in that time.

These teams last saw each other recently in a road win for Yale 90-61 on February 1. The Bulldogs controlled most aspects of that game, shooting a smooth 57.1 percent from the field with a 41-30 rebounding edge and just 34.8 percent shooting allowed on the other side. There are a few things to clean up in this home rematch—namely the 11 turnovers—but Yale should be in control during most facets of the game. Penn is heading back out on the road after four straight home games and they’ve scored a combined 120 points in their last two outings. I don’t think they’ve got the firepower to keep the pace against Yale this time either.
