UTEP Miners Betting Preview

The Miners’ season got off to a tough start as the team hit the road to face Utah State. UTEP faced a 10-point deficit by halftime and couldn’t make it up in the end during a 28-16 loss. Malachi Nelson threw for a 22-of-34 line, 178 yards, one TD and one interception. Kam Thomas led the rush with 16 carries for 36 yards and Ashten Emory had six carries for 31 yards and a score in the losing effort. Kenny Odom was a bright spot among the receivers, hauling in nine passes for 97 yards and a touchdown along the way.

In their second outing of the year versus Tennessee-Martin, the Miners scored 21 points in the second quarter alone on the way to a 42-17 win. Nelson was 14-of-26 for 278 yards and four touchdowns this time. Hahsaun Wilson had eight carries for 117 yards and a score, while Odom topped the receivers again with five catches for 124 yards and a touchdown.

Texas Longhorns Betting Preview

Over on the Texas side, their 2025 campaign kicked off with a game versus a tough Ohio State squad. The Longhorns were able to hang in there quite well—especially considering that the game was played at Ohio Stadium—but eventually walked away with a tough loss 14-7. QB Arch Manning was 17-of-30 for 170 yards, one TD and one interception. Quintrevion Wisner carried 16 times for 70 yards, while Jack Endries led the receivers on four catches for 50 yards. Parker Livingstone caught the TD among his pair of grabs for 47 yards.

Texas had a much easier matchup in game two versus San Jose State last weekend. The Longhorns were up 28-7 by the break, scoring double-digit points in each of the first three quarters during a 38-7 victory. Manning went 19-of-30 for 295 yards, four scores and a pick this time, while also scoring a rush TD. CJ Baxter led the rush with 64 yards on 13 carries. Livingstone caught four balls for 128 yards and two touchdowns, and Endries had another good game with two touchdown catches for 52 yards total.

UTEP vs Texas Prediction

I’ll lean toward Texas, but I’m probably staying away from this one. The line’s going to be pretty thick just about everywhere and it’s not worth messing around with. In any case, Texas has done quite well so far this season—all things considered. The opener matchup versus Ohio State was a defensive battle, as Texas gave up just 203 yards (126 passing), 3.8 yards per play, 11 first downs and a 3-of-12 rate on third downs. Being on the road against an excellent team, that’s pretty darn impressive.

The Texas offense woke up in game two versus an overmatched San Jose State squad. The Longhorns collected 472 yards (317 passing) and 18 first downs in that one but there’s plenty to work on. Namely  the 12 penalties, 2-of-12 rate on third-down tries and two turnovers simply have to be better. All of that said I’m still pretty high on Texas right now. They should have no problem whatsoever dominating this game from start to finish.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Texas Longhorns -40.5
