The Blazers got into a shootout with Alabama State in their opener, scoring in every quarter (and giving up points in every quarter) during a wild 52-42 victory. QB Jalen Kitna threw for 247 yards, two scores and an 18-of-23 line. Corri Milliner led the receivers with five grabs for 98 yards and a TD, while Jevon Jackson (166 yards) and Solomon Beebe (51 yards) each had two scores.
In game two versus Navy, UAB was all tied up 24-24 by halftime but didn’t score again from there in a 38-24 loss. Kitna was 22-of-32 for 304 yards, two scores and two picks this time, and Jackson had 66 yards rushing with a TD. Milliner added six catches for 100 yards and a touchdown of his own in the loss.
In game three versus Akron, UAB did all their scoring in the first half but managed to hang on for the 31-28 win in the end. Kitna threw for 341 yards, two scores and a pick this time, with Jackson adding 14 carries for 45 yards. Iverson Hooks tallied five catches for 84 yards to top the receiving corps.
Over on the Tennessee side, they started things out with a matchup versus Syracuse. The Vols posted a comfortable 17-point lead by halftime and rolled to the win 45-26. Joey Aguilar was 16-of-28 for 247 yards and three touchdowns while Star Thomas led the rush on 92 yards off 12 totes. Braylon Staley added four catches for 95 yards and a touchdown.
Game two versus East Tennessee State was pretty routine, as Tennessee scored 24 points in each of the first two quarters on the way to a dominant 72-17 victory. Aguilar was 23-of-31 for 288 yards and two touchdowns this time, and Thomas notched three rush TDs among his 12 carries for 69 yards. Chris Brazzell led the rush with nine catches for 125 yards and two touchdowns in the win.
Matched up against a tough Georgia team last weekend, the Volunteers held a 21-17 lead by halftime but that evaporated in the second half. Tennessee eventually lost in OT 44-41. Aguilar managed 371 yards, four scores and two picks in the defeat while Star Thomas rushed for 60 yards. Brazzell led the receivers again, notching six grabs for 177 yards and three scores.
Heading into Week 4, Corri Milliner leads the American Conference for receiving touchdowns (3) this season.
Tennessee ranks 2nd among FBS teams for average point differential in first quarters this season (+18.3).
Tennessee ranks 6th among FBS teams for points per game this season (52.7).
UAB ranks 131st among FBS teams for rushing yards allowed per game this season (218.7).
UAB ranks T128th among FBS teams for H1 opponent points per game this season (21.7).
I’ll probably just lean toward Tennessee. The Vols need a good bounce-back effort after falling to Georgia last weekend and this is a good matchup to get it. Tennessee managed 496 yards of offense in that one (371 passing) but only went 5-of-12 on third-down tries. The 10 penalties for 82 yards and two interceptions didn’t help matters either. The Volunteers also held the ball for just 24:15 as opposed to Georgia’s 50:38. Still, Tennessee has put up 41 or more points in all three games so far and should have no issues notching points here either.
As for UAB, they really slowed down in the second half of the Akron win and ended up going just 3-of-12 on third-down tries. The Blazers are in for a tough, tough game Saturday.
