Texas had a pretty wild campaign last year. The Longhorns fielded a strong squad, eventually going 13-3 overall with a 7-1 run in Southeastern Conference games. The bad news is that Texas had a program-record 12 players from last year’s squad selected in the 2025 NFL Draft. That means there were plenty of holes to fill in the offseason. That said, there’s plenty of hype surrounding the roster this season. The schedule won’t be easy to navigate however, so the Longhorns will have their hands full in getting back to double-digit wins.

Over on the Buckeyes’ side, they’re coming off a wild season themselves. Ohio State was the favorite to win a jam-packed Big Ten Conference, and responded by winning their first five games. A one-point loss to Oregon at Autzen Stadium derailed the campaign, but the Buckeyes would rally for five more victories. A near unthinkable home loss to unranked Michigan was a gut punch however, and knocked Ohio State out of the Big Ten Championship game. Following CFP wins over Tennessee, Oregon, Texas and Notre Dame, the Buckeyes would claim their first national championship since 2014 to cap off a 14-2 run (7-2 in the Big Ten). They hold the distinction of being the first 12-team CFP champs.

After that whirlwind season, it’s tough to guess what’s in store for Ohio State in 2025. Ryan Day is back for his seventh year as head coach, and he’ll have a few new faces on the coaching staff—namely defensive coordinator Matt Patricia. The Buckeyes had a whopping 14 players selected in the 2025 NFL Draft and a slew of outgoing transfers, so there are plenty of questions about this season’s reload. Still, many of the expected impact players got plenty of on-field experience last year so it may not be quite a difficult roster transition.

I’m going to lean slightly toward Ohio State in this one, but you could certainly make a case either way. This is going to be one of the weekend’s highlight games and there are sure to be plenty of fireworks. The Buckeyes have generated plenty of conversation during the offseason, with opinions in all directions. The truth is, Ohio State has a much tougher schedule than a team like Penn State—who incidentally is a trendy pick to overtake the Buckeyes on the national stage. The Buckeyes have plenty to prove early, considering they’ve got major turnover on not only the coaching staff but in key positions on both sides of the ball. When the dust settles in this opener however, I think Ohio State will have enough talent and fortitude to eke out a home cover. Should be a great matchup regardless.
