Monmouth took a road trip to Colgate for their first matchup of the year, and it was a thriller. The Hawks faced a 24-7 halftime deficit and looked cooked, but stormed back with 35 second-half points during an epic comeback victory 42-39. Derek Robertson had a wild day on 34-of-45 passing for 491 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. Rodney Nelson did the vast majority of the rushing work, totaling 22 carries for 169 yards and two touchdowns (there were only three non-Nelson carries in the game for the Hawks). Tops in receiving was Gavin Nelson on five catches for 176 yards and three scores. Three different Monmouth players had at least 100 yards apiece.
In their second outing versus Fordham last weekend, the Hawks scored 34 points in the first half while surrendering 21 on the other side. Monmouth was able to keep the Rams at bay however, eventually winning 49-28. Robertson was on fire with 342 yards and six scores with a pick on 29-of-43 passing. Nelson rushed 25 times for 113 yards, and leading the receivers was Josh Derry with 10 catches for 144 yards and a whopping four TDs.
Over on the Charlotte side, they had a pretty tough matchup versus Appalachian State in their opener this season. The Niners had a brief lead early but got outscored 34-8 down the stretch in a 34-11 loss. Conner Harrell threw for 142 yards, one TD and one pick on a 13-of-24 line, and leading the rush was CJ Stokes on 15 carries fo 49 yards. Justin Olson was the team’s leading receiver with 56 yards off two catches, while E. Jai Mason had two catches for 29 yards and the team’s only touchdown in the defeat.
Matched up against North Carolina last weekend, the 49ers gave up 17 points in the first half but got better defensively after the break (three points allowed). Unfortunately Charlotte could only muster a field goal in a 20-3 loss. Harrell had 140 yards this time, and Grayson Loftis had 110 yards with a pair of interceptions. Rod Gainey led the anemic rush with 15 yards, but Javen Nicholas was a bright spot on 11 catches for 122 yards.
Heading into Week 3, E. Jai Mason leads Charlotte for touchdowns (1) this season.
Charlotte ranks 134th among FBS teams for red zone percentage this season (20.0).
Charlotte ranks 133rd among FBS teams for average point differential in second quarters this season (-10.5).
I’ll likely stay with Monmouth. The Hawks are cooking on offense right now, scoring 91 points combined across their two appearances. Monmouth has given up 67 combined points on defense however so there’s plenty of room for improvement—especially once the schedule starts getting tougher. For now though, I like that Hawks offense this weekend.
As for Charlotte, they would have been fairly competitive with North Carolina last weekend if they’d only been able to get the running game going—and avoid the two picks. The Niners put up just 21 yards on the ground and 3.8 yards per play but also held the Tar Heels in check pretty well on the other side. The defense gave up 303 yards (155 passing), 15 first downs and just 5-of-15 on third-down tries. Charlotte has scored just 14 points in two games though—while giving up 54 total on defense. I’m not optimistic about them here either.
