In this article we will formulate a Maine vs Appalachian State prediction for this College Football game on Saturday, September 5th at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, North Carolina. Let’s take a look at the prediction for this Week 1 matchup.

Maine Black Bears Betting Preview

The Maine Black Bears are 1-0 this year after they defeated Towson by a score of 21-18 in week zero. Maine led 21-8 at halftime and they got the win, but failed to score in the second half. The Black Bears were out gained by a total of 379-329, went 5-14 on third downs, and won the turnover battle by a total of 2-0 in the game. Eddie Buehler threw for 199 yards and two touchdowns, while Evan Wallace caught three passes for 43 yards. Rashawn Marshall rushed 13 times for 81 yards and one score in the win.

Last season, Maine went 6-6 (5-3) and they finished sixth in the CAA standings. Maine started the season with a 28-7 loss against Liberty and they actually started with four straight losses. The Black Bears faced another FBS team in Georgia Southern, which was a 45-17 loss. Maine bounced back from that 0-4 loss by winning six games in a row, but they lost each of their last two against ranked opponents to end the year.

Appalachian State Mountaineers Betting Preview

The Appalachian State Mountaineers went 5-8 (2-6) last season and they finished sixth in the Sun Belt East standings. App State opened the season with a 34-11 win over Charlotte and defeated FCS Lindenwood 20-13 after that. The Mountaineers were 4-2 through six games, but they lost five of their last six games, before losing the Birmingham Bowl against Georgia Southern by a score of 29-10. Appalachian State really struggled on defense last year, as they allowed 29+ points in three of their last four games and six of their 13 games. The Mountaineers scored 24.2 points per game in 2025, while they allowed 29.8 points against per game on defense.

This season, Appalachian State will have a new quarterback, along with mostly a brand new offense, as they are replacing most starters. The Mountaineers have some decent talent coming in, but the offensive line is a concern. On defense, Appalachian State has to be better than they were last season, as they were the worst pass defense in the conference. The Mountaineers do have one of the better linebackers in the conference, but the secondary is a big question mark.

Why the Appalachian State Mountaineers will win

  • Appalachian State has won each of its last 11 home games against non-FBS teams.

  • The underdog has covered the spread in each of Appalachian State’s last four games at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

Matchup/League Facts

  • Appalachian State ranked 122nd among FBS teams for Q3 opponent points per game last season (7.8).

Maine vs Appalachian State Prediction

Appalachian State comes into this matchup as nearly a three touchdown favorite, but they are working in a lot of new faces on both sides of the ball. The Mountaineers will be at home against a lesser opponent, so they should win, but Maine wasn’t terrible last year. The Black Bears hung around against Liberty and they scored 17 against Georgia Southern, plus they have the advantage of playing in week zero. I will take App State to cover at home, but I am not excited about it.

David Racey's Pick: App State -19.5
