The Florida International Panthers and the South Florida Bulls will meet Saturday night in the season opener for both teams at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. Let’s take a look at this matchup from a betting perspective.
Florida International Panthers Betting Preview
The Florida International Panthers finished the 2025 season with a 7–6 overall record and a 5–3 mark in Conference USA which ranked fourth in the conference. Florida International compiled a 4–2 home record and a 3–3 mark on the road. Head coach Willie Simmons enters his second season with the program after leading the Panthers to a bowl berth in his debut campaign.
The FIU offense was productive throughout the 2025 season. The Panthers scored 27.4 points per game (59th in country) and averaged 393.3 total yards per game, including 213.9 passing yards and 179.4 rushing yards (33rd in nation). Florida International’s offensive identity leaned heavily on a balanced approach with a strong run game complementing efficient quarterback play.
Shifting our focus to the defensive side of the football, FIU allowed 31.8 points per game and 417.7 total yards per game, including 251.3 passing yards and 166.4 rushing yards. The Panthers struggled at times with explosive plays but remained competitive enough to stay in games due to their offensive consistency.
FIU returns several key offensive contributors. Wide receiver Kyle McNeal tallied 31 receptions, 310 receiving yards and 1 receiving touchdown. Wide receiver Maguire Anderson added 25 receptions and 280 receiving yards. Transfer signal caller JJ Kohl was acquired in the offseason and has been named the starting quarterback for the 2026 season.
South Florida Bulls Betting Preview
The South Florida Bulls finished the 2025 season with a 9–4 overall record and a 6–2 mark in conference play which ranked second in the American Athletic Conference. South Florida amassed an undefeated 6–0 home win-loss record and a 3–3 mark on the road. New head coach Brian Hartline enters his first season with the Bulls after being hired in December 2025.
The University of South Florida offense was explosive last season, ranking among the top scoring units in the American Athletics Conference. In 2025, the Bulls operated a fast paced scheme built around tempo, spread concepts and vertical passing. Brian Hartline is expected to bring an aggressive and innovative approach to the team’s offense in 2026.
The Bulls averaged 45.4 points per game (5th in nation) and compiled 486.2 total yards per game, including 277.6 passing yards and 208.8 rushing yards. Defensively, South Florida allowed 24.2 points per game and ranked among the top 10 nationally in turnovers gained, forcing 23 turnovers.
South Florida lost several key offensive weapons in the offseason. With that said, wide receiver Mudia Reuben returns to South Florida in 2026 after amassing 36 receptions, 495 yards and 5 touchdowns last season. I fully expect Reuben to improve on those offensive numbers this season.
Quarterback Byrum Brown delivered one of the most productive seasons in program history in 2025. Unfortunately, Brown is no longer with the team. In the offseason, the South Florida Bulls added talented transfer quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr. (who previously played for the Mississippi State Bulldogs and the LSU Tigers) to lead the team in 2026.
Why the Florida International University Panthers will win.
• Florida International posted an 8-5-0 record against the spread last season.
• The Panthers compiled a 7-6 win-loss record in 2025, ranking fourth in the American Athletic Conference.
Why the South Florida Bulls will win.
• South Florida’s record against the spread last season was 8-4-1.
• The South Florida Bulls averaged 45.4 points a game last season which ranked fifth in the country.
• South Florida’s ATS record as at least 14.5 point favorites was 3-0 last season.
Florida International University vs. South Florida Prediction
In my view, this matchup favors the South Florida Bulls. Why? The Bulls offense performed at a high level in 2025, averaging a massive 45.4 points a game which ranked fifth in the nation. Additionally, South Florida played exceptionally well at home last season, amassing an undefeated 6-0 win-loss record. Quite simply, the Bulls are the far more talented team in this matchup. For the reasons just noted, I am backing the South Florida Bulls to cover the 13.5 points in this game.
