Florida Atlantic Owls Betting Preview

Back on August 30, the Owls opened up their season with a road trip to Maryland and things didn’t go very well. Florida Atlantic gave up 26 points in the second quarter alone, limping to a 39-7 blowout loss. QB Caden Veltkamp was pretty rough on 30-of-49 passing for 228 yards, one TD and four interceptions (part of six on the day). Gemari Sands led the rushers with nine carries for 44 yards, and Easton Messer topped the receivers with 15 catches for 87 yards along the way to the loss.

In game two versus Florida A&M, the Owls didn’t have too many issues. Florida Atlantic was up 39-0 by the end of the first half and coasted to a 56-14 blowout victory. Veltkamp was 27-of-39 for 309 yards and a whopping five touchdowns this time. Sands had 10 carries for 83 yards, while Messer was tops among receivers again with his four catches for 62 yards. Jayshon Platt had five catches for 56 yards and a score, while Assad Waseem and Dom Henry combined for four touchdowns.

Florida International Panthers Betting Preview

Over on the Florida International side, they made short work of Bethune-Cookman in their opener this year. The Panthers scored in every quarter—including 21 in the second—during a 42-9 victory. Keyone Jenkins was 18-of-30 for 187 yards passing, and Eric Nelson led the receivers with two grabs for 47 yards. Kejon Owens topped the rushers with 71 yards and two scores off 11 carries, but Devonte Lyons and Anthony Carrie each had a rush TD as well.

Matched up against Penn State last weekend, FIU couldn’t find much room on either side. The Panthers gave up points in every quarter, trailing 24-0 during the second half in a 34-0 loss. Jenkins went 15-of-28 for 127 yards and an interception this time, and Owens once again led the way with 78 yards on 15 carries. JoJo Stone’s lone 27-yard catch put him atop the receivers, but Ross Fournet wasn’t too far behind with 22 yards on three grabs of his own.

Florida Atlantic vs Florida International Prediction

I’m staying with Florida International. Going into Beaver Stadium to face Penn State was never going to be an easy chore, and last weekend’s game went just about how you might expect it to. FIU gained 290 yards total (149 passing) alongside two turnovers, 14 first downs and a 6-of-18 rate on third-down conversions. On defense the Panthers gave up 409 yards (209 rushing) and 6.4 yards per play with no takeaways. That said, FIU stood tall on third downs with 3-of-12 allowed overall. That’s something at least.

Things went much better in the Panthers’ first game against Bethune-Cookman, as FIU gathered 456 yards (223 rushing), 6.2 yards per play and 28 first downs. The defense was pretty stout there as well with 5-of-15 allowed on third-down tries. This weekend’s game versus FAU likely won’t be as lopsided, but the Panthers should still have a decent-sized advantage when it comes to controlling the matchups.

Andrew Jett's Pick: FIU Panthers -2.5
