East Carolina Pirates Betting Preview

East Carolina had a tough opener matchup versus Alabama. The Pirates were down 38-7 going into the second half and eventually lost 48-10 at Bryant-Denny in Tuscaloosa. ECU’s Mitch Griffis was 10-of-16 for 137 yards, one TD and one interception. Ashton Gray led the rush on just 17 yards and Tyler Johnson’s 68-yard catch put him atop the receivers in the loss.

Last weekend versus App State, the Pirates managed to fall behind 17-10 by the end of the first half. East Carolina ended up scoring in every quarter but it wasn’t enough in a tough loss 27-24. Griffis went 21-of-37 for 230 yards, two scores and a pick. Gray was tops in the rushing attack during the loss, bagging 16 carries for 99 yards along the way.

Old Dominion Monarchs Betting Preview

Over on the Monarchs’ side, they didn’t have too much issue with Norfolk State in their opener this year. Old Dominion was up 17-7 by the break then scored a couple more touchdowns in a 31-10 win. QB Quinn Henicle was 9-of-12 for 143 yards, two scores and one interception while also leading the rush on 68 yards and two scores off 13 totes. JJ Harrell had three catches for 51 yards.

Matched up against Virginia Tech, Old Dominion coughed up 17 points in each of the first two quarters. The Monarchs gave up points in every quarter (but also scored in every quarter themselves) in a 44-21 loss. Henicle went 13-of-21 for 187 yards with one TD and also led the rush for the Monarchs with 16 carries for 83 yards and a touchdown.

East Carolina vs Old Dominion Prediction

I’ll lean toward Old Dominion. The Monarchs were overmatched versus Virginia Tech last weekend, but still managed to land a few punches here and there. ODU finished with 310 total yards (123 rushing) and 6.0 yards per play but only 11 first downs and three lost fumbles. The defense gave up 327 pass yards and 26 first downs but also picked up a couple of lost fumbles themselves. The offense couldn’t stay on the field either (21:36 in time of possession).

As for ECU, they racked up 417 yards and 22 first downs in the loss to App State. The Pirates went just 2-of-13 on third downs though, and had two turnovers with eight team penalties for 72 yards. Overall this should be a fun matchup but I like the Monarchs better.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Old Dominion Monarchs -2.5
