Maria Sakkari will play Barbora Krejcikova in the Athens Open final on Sunday, July 19th. Sakkari is seeking her third career title and undoubtedly the best of the lot as it is contested on home soil. Krejcikova, meanwhile, can win her ninth WTA title. Here’s our Maria Sakkari vs Barbora Krejcikova prediction. This preview will include a Maria Sakkari vs Barbora Krejcikova pick.

Maria Sakkari vs Barbora Krejcikova Preview

Maria Sakkari reached her first final of the season at the Athens Open. The Greek star defeated 19-year-old Alina Korneeva in straight sets to progress. The match took 19 games to decide. Sakkari prevailed 6-1, 7-5 in an hour and 23 minutes. She needed two attempts to serve out the match late in the second set, but got the job done.

In the victory, Sakkari hit 2 aces and landed 65% of first serves in play. Sakkari won 72% of first serve points (26/36). She won 63% of second serve points (12/19) and saved one of three break points in the match. Before this round, Sakkari had beaten Kudermetova, Harriet Dart and Alycia Parks. She has not dropped a set this week. Sakkari’s last title win was in Guadalajara in 2023. Her other WTA title was in Rabat seven years ago.

Barbora Krejcikova reached her third final of the season thanks to a three-set win over big-hitting Clara Tauson. Krejcikova dominated the first set and won it 6-1 in 48 minutes. But Tauson leveled by rallying from behind in the second set, breaking Krejcikova at least three times. The Czech eventually regained her level and broke Tauson thrice in the deciding set to clinch her spot in the final.

In the victory, Krejcikova hit 4 aces and 9 double faults. Krejcikova landed 60% of first serves in play and won 66% of first serve points (35/53). She won 42% of second serve points (15/36) and saved 6 out of 10 break points in the match. Krejcikova lost both finals this season, although her run in Den Bosch ended with a late withdrawal from the final.

Maria Sakkari vs Barbora Krejcikova Head-To-Head

Krejcikova has beaten Sakkari in both meetings they have contested at the WTA level, although they haven’t played since that epic2021 French Open semifinal where Krejcikova saved a match point on her way to winning the tournament.

Maria Sakkari vs Barbora Krejcikova Prediction

Considering the circumstances, it would be foolish not to pick Sakkari here. This is probably her biggest week on the calendar as the WTA Tour makes its first pitstop to Athens in 35 years and for Greece’s most prominent player to feature in the final is massive. And Sakkari didn’t get to the final by accident. This is the best she has played since Doha. And I think in recent weeks, she’s played like a true Top 50 player.
