Learner Tien is only 19 and is currently ranked 67th in the ATP rankings. It’s just one spot below his career-high mark on the ATP Tour. The young American made his mark on the Challenger level last season before earning a spot in the Next Gen ATP Finals. There, he reached the final and lost to Brazilian wunderkind Joao Fonseca.

Tien has since elevated his level to be part of the Top 100. He upset Daniil Medvedev in this year’s Australian Open, in a real breakthrough moment on the main tour. Tien is currently 15-15 for the season after an underwhelming clay swing. Before this month, he had never played a grass court match on the pro tour. He has a 1-2 record after competing Stuttgart and Halle. His only win was a retirement one in Stuttgart against Yoshihito Nishioka. So, he’s still chasing a first completed win on grass.

Meeting him in the first round will be Justin Engel, who is another teenager flourishing quickly. Engel is ranked a career-high No. 235 on the ATP Tour. He is 17 and has mostly played on the ITF circuit in his young career. He won on his full debut in Hamburg against Jan Lennard Struff on clay, and that earned him a wild card in the ATP 250 in Stuttgart for his first taste on grass. There, he scored another upset win against James Duckworth in the first round. Engel backed it up by knocking out Tien’s good friend Alex Michelsen in the subsequent round to reach an unlikely quarterfinal. There, he was beaten by Felix Auger-Aliassime. After Stuttgart, he played in Halle qualifying and lost in the second round to Sebastian Ofner.

This is more of a 50/50 matchup and the bookies are instilling Tien as the pre-match favorite, but only just. And you’d have to agree with that. I think from the little we’ve seen from Engel, he loves pace and is not fazed by it, which explains why some of his recent results have been against power hitters. But Tien offers something different. He’s one of the smartest young players on tour who has such a diverse mix of shots in his game. That will give Engel a lot fo work to do. I’m going with Tien to win outright.
