Joao Fonseca will face Tomas Machac in the second round of the 2025 US Open. The match is scheduled for Wednesday, August 27. Here’s our Joao Fonseca vs Tomas Machac prediction. This preview will also include a Joao Fonseca vs Tomas Machac pick.
Joao Fonseca vs Tomas Machac Preview
Joao Fonseca is competing in his maiden US Open main draw at the senior level after the Brazilian youngster broke into the world’s Top 50. Fonseca is coming off a straight-sets win in the opening round, beating Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic 7-6, 7-6, 6-3 in two hours and 28 minutes. Fonseca delivered a dominant performance throughout, hammering 51 winners to 32 unforced errors. He accounted for 14 aces without serving a single double fault. Fonseca landed 62% of first serves in play and won 75% of first serve points (47/63). Fonseca won 63% of second serve points (24/38) and saved one of three break points.
This now means Fonseca has won a first-round match on debut at each Grand Slam tournament this season. He has reached the third round twice in his last two slams, and his only second-round defeat was at the Australian Open to Lorenzo Sonego. Fonseca won the US Open junior title in 2023.
Tomas Machac enters this match as the higher-ranked player. The Czech sits firmly inside the Top 30 and is only two spots below the Top 20, a goal he will hope to achieve for a second time this week. Machac won his opening match in straight sets, dropping just five games to Italy’s Luca Nardi.
Machac spent just 83 minutes dismissing Nardi, and that would come as welcome relief from a physical standpoint, considering the persistent injury setbacks in his career. He tallied 25 winners to 17 unforced errors, including 10 aces. Machac landed 69% of first serves in play and won 78% of first serve points (31/40). He won 78% of second serve points (14/18) and saved both break points he faced in the match.

Joao Fonseca vs Tomas Machac Prediction
I do like Fonseca in this one. Machac reached the fourth round while competing at the US Open last season, but now faces a possible early exit. Fonseca is arguably the most talented player of his generation and proved it at the back end of last year when he won the Next Gen title. He has since broken into the top 50, and the scary thing is that he has only scratched the surface of potential. He’s got a fearless approach in how he carries himself around the court, and his offensive game has already troubled some established names on tour. Machac is more polished between them at this stage, but if Fonseca can consistently outhit the Czech, then he can put himself in a spot to absolutely win the match. Let’s also not forget that the longer this match goes, Machac’s chances (with his documented injury record) will diminish.
