Jessica Pegula suffered a one-sided defeat to Paula Badosa at the China Open this past week. It was only her third defeat in 20 matches on hard courts, during which time Pegula enjoyed a fruitful campaign in North America.

She successfully retained the Canadian Open in Toronto (the first time it has happened on the WTA Tour in more than two decades) and then made the final of both Cincinnati and the US Open, the latter being her first major final. Unfortunately, she had the misfortune of playing a red-hot Aryna Sabalenka and lost both times.

Pegula, who just a few months ago was in danger of missing out on competing at the WTA Finals next month, is now in pole position to qualify at the showpiece event in Riyadh, having assumed control of the rankings as the No. 1 American. 

She had a bye in the first round and will, therefore, kick off her 2024 Wuhan Open campaign in the second round.

Anastasia Potapova was in action in the first round, where she picked up her first match win since the end of August. Potapova played just one tournament after her third-round finish at the US Open and lost her opening match in Beijing to Greet Minnen.

But she was back in the winner’s column in Wuhan, beating American Katie Volynets5-7, 6-3, 7-5, in a topsy-turvy encounter. Potapova needed two bites of the cherry to seal the match, which could have gone either way.
