The third set stayed on serve until the seventh game when Cobolli broke, and saved three break points on his serve to lead 5-3. Two games later, Cobolli won the set 6-4. The fourth set, remarkably finished with the same score, as Cobolli broke early on and consolidated that advantage.Overall, Cobolli hit 33 winners and 46 unforced errors in the match. Cobolli will contest his first Grand Slam semifinal and is assured of a Top 10 debut after the tournament. Will he reach the French Open final?
Matteo Arnaldi, meanwhile, earned a retirement win over countryman Matteo Berrettini in the last quarterfinal of the day. Arnaldi was contesting his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the French Open, but didn’t let the moment get to him as he won a competitive first set from 3-0 down. Berrettini could barely move for most of the second set as Arnaldi broke his serve twice to lead 5-2.
Berrettini succumbed to a hip injury and retired from the match, giving Arnaldi passage into the semifinals and setting up another all-Italian clash. That means an Italian man will appear in Sunday’s final at Roland Garros for the second straight year. Before this round, Arnaldi beat Griekspoor, Tsitsipas, Collignon and Tiafoe. A couple of his matches went to five sets.
