Emma Navarro is the World No. 10 but missed out on a seeding spot in the Berlin Tennis Open. That is because seven of the top eight players have signed up to play in this WTA 500 event. It is fully stacked. And Navarro finds herself having to negotiate a first-round match in a tournament.

The American enjoyed a great start to the season on hard courts, reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and clinching her first WTA 500 title in Merida. But clay proved a tricky surface for Navarro to pick up any momentum, and that led to a humiliating 6-0, 6-1 loss in the opening match at this year’s French Open. In all my time watching Navarro, that was probably the most crushing loss. She was able to quickly bounce back at Queen’s to kick off her grass swing with a bang, saving a match point and beating Haddad Maia. But she lost in the subsequent round to Amanda Anisimova. This will be Navarro’s second appearance in Berlin. She lost to Katerina Siniakova in the first round last year.

Marta Kostyuk Preview

Marta Kostyuk is also unseeded at the Berlin Tennis Open. This will be her second appearance in this WTA tournament. Last year, she lost in the first round to Daria Kasatkina in three sets. Kostyuk is starting her grass swing a bit later than some of her peers, opting to miss Queen’s. She’s coming off a first-round loss at the French Open to Czech teenager Sara Bejlek. Two of her last three defeats have been to Aryna Sabalenka. Kostyuk has compiled a 17-12 record in 2025, picking up 10 wins on hard courts. Last year, Kostyuk reached he third round of Wimbledon on grass, which is the second successive year she’s made it that far at SW19.

Navarro starts this match as the clear favorite with the sportsbooks, but I don’t fully agree with that. This is a 50/50 matchup in my eyes. Yes, Navarro has shown more promising signs on grass, especially in the past year, where she beat the likes of Osaka and Gauff at Wimbledon, but there’s so much uncertainty in her game right now. Her form has been a bit of a funk, and her timing on the ball looks off. I still think she’ll figure it out by Wimbledon, but Kostyuk might enjoy an easier transition to the grass.
