Elise Mertens won one of the craziest matches of the season in the semifinal of the Libema Open, beating two-time former champion Ekaterina Alexandrova. The Belgian pulled off an extraordinary comeback in the second set, where she saved an astonishing 11 match points before prevailing in a tie-break and forcing a third set. In the third set, Mertens rallied from a break down to win three games in a row from 3-4 down. She is only the second woman in the Open Era to win a match after saving as many as 11 match points. 

Before the semifinal, Mertens had not dropped a set and bagelled three players along the way. She beat Viktoriya Tomova 6-4, 6-0 in her opening match. In the second round, she dispatched former Top 10 player Maria Sakkari 6-3, 6-0 and ousted Yuan Yue 6-4, 6-0 in the last eight. This will be her third final of 2025. Mertens was a runner-up in Hobart but won the WTA 250 in Singapore.

We were sure of a first-time finalist on grass, and Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Elena-Gabriela Ruse put in a good show in the second semifinal in a rain-interrupted match which went the Romanian’s way. Ruse lost the first set 6-2 – the only set she dropped in the tournament. But she battled back to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-3. Despite some difficulty closing out the match, Ruse sealed her spot in her first grass-court final of her career. The 27-year-old started this breakthrough run from qualifying, beating compatriot Buzarnescu and Poland’s Kawa. She also knocked out Bianca Andreescu in the quarterfinals. Ruse has one WTA title to her name, which she won at the 2021 Hamburg Open on clay.
