Coco Gauff vs Jessica Pegula Preview
Coco Gauff survived another three-set tussle to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time. With her back against the wall after dropping the first set 6-4 in 50 minutes, Gauff fought back to beat Belinda Bencic 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 19 minutes. In the victory, Gauff hit 35 winners and 46 unforced errors. Gauff hit 4 aces and 9 double faults. She landed 59% of first serves in play and won 69% of first serve points (40/58). Gauff won 40% of second serve points (16/40) and saved three of seven break points in the match.
Before this round, Gauff had beaten Tamara Korpatsch, Solana Sierra and Claire Liu, with each of her last three matches going the full distance. This is her best run at Wimbledon, so can she make it to the last four?
Jessica Pegula is quietly emerging as the top favorite to win the tournament. Thanks to a succession of top seeds tumbling early, Pegula remains the most experienced grass-court player in the draw and she proved with a battling three-set victory against fellow American Iva Jovic.
Like Gauff, Pegula managed to recover from dropping the opening set, and totally dominated the next two sets. She lost just four games in two sets to prevail 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in two hours and 13 minutes. In the victory, Pegula hit 21 winners and 33 unforced errors. She landed 62% of first serves in play and won 64% of first serve points (30/47).
Pegula won 41% of second serve points (12/29) and saved three of eight break points on her serve. This is Pegula’s second quarterfinal at Wimbledon. She lost to eventual champion Marketa Vondrousova back in 2023.
