Carlos Alcaraz extended his winning run to 11 matches (including the Laver Cup) after the US Open. He defeated a second Chinese opponent in a row at the Shanghai Masters to reach the fourth-round stage. 

The Spaniard, who captured his first title on Asian soil in Beijing this past week, played exceptional tennis against an inspired Yibing Wu in a thrilling straight-sets match that took 22 games to decide. 

Wu competed bravely, as he saved a couple of break points in the first set which he forced a tie-break. Ultimately, Alcaraz played some exquisite shots in the breaker to steal it and then got the only break of the match in the second set to prevail 7-6, 6-3 in an hour and 41 minutes.

Gael Monfils, for his part, upset fellow Frenchman Ugo Humbert 7-6, 2-6, 6-1 in two hours and 14 minutes. In the victory, Monfils compiled ten aces and three double faults. He won 75% of first-serve points (47/63) and 45% of second-serve points (15/33). The 38-year-old converted three of eight break points and saved six of nine on his own serve.

Monfils rolled back the years when they last faced off in Cincinnati and recorded his first-ever win over Alcaraz, who later on termed the defeat as the worst match he’s played in his young career. And I can’t see how the Frenchman can come up with another odds-defying moment for a couple of reasons. 

Alcaraz just wasn’t at the races during the summer hard-court swing in the States, particularly after a grueling Olympics final. Secondly, the rain delay in the match partially affected his momentum as their clash was completed over two days. So, Monfils won’t benefit from such luxury as Alcaraz looks in splendid form.
