Anna Kalinskaya is ranked 48th in the WTA ranking, when less than a year ago, she was at a career-high No. 11. The Russian is making her third appearance in Washington, D.C., having played in this tournament in 2019 and 2022. She was a semifinalist on her debut six years ago as a qualifier and lost a quarterfinal three years later. In her first visit since 2022, Kalinskaya has motored into yet another quarterfinal at the Citi Open.

Kalinskaya, who is unseeded, defeated Kamilla Rakhimova in her opening match, dropping just five games in an hour and 16-minute encounter. She made a rapid start to the match, breaking countrywoman Rakhimova three times in the first set. In the second set, two breaks of serve were all she needed to complete a 6-2, 6-3 win. Kalinskaya hit three aces and four double faults. She landed 66% of first serves in play and won 77% of first serve points (24/31). Kalinskaya won 44% of second serve points (7/16) and saved two of three break points.

In the second round, Kalinskaya produced arguably her best performance of the season, swatting aside Poland’s Magda Linette 6-4, 6-0 in an hour and 17 minutes. After a tense first set which stayed on serve in the first eight games, Kalinskaya was the only one to break in the ninth game and served for the set to 15. In the second set, the World No 48 broke Linette three times and never relinquished her own serve. Kalinskaya won 83% of first serve points (25/30) and saved both break points she faced in the match. This will be her first WTA quarterfinal since Strasbourg in May when she had to withdraw from the tournament.

Clara Tauson is the fourth seed, sitting at a career-high ranking of World No. 19. The Dane is making her second appearance in Washington. She lost in the first round on her debut to Andrea Petkovic back in 2022. But Tauson arrived in DC this week as one of the contenders after a fine first half of the season, where she won her third career title in Auckland and reached the WTA 1000 in Dubai. As a seed, Tauson only needed to win once to make the quarterfinals in Washington this week, but it was a slugfest, needing three hours and 11 minutes to beat Caroline Dolehide. She lost the first set 6-3, but leveled the match by winning one of the longest sets in the tournament after an hour and 21 minutes. In the decider, Tauson was forced to play some of her best tennis, fending off some crucial break points and winning it 6-4.

It’s not for the fun of it that I’m tipping a Kalinskaya win here, but I feel like she has not received enough credit when she’s healthy. She’s one of the cleanest hitters. Fitness has been her biggest hindrance to becoming a WTA champion and a Top 10 player. And after two dominant performances, confidence can only be trending up. That’s not good news for Clara Tauson, who came into the tournament this week as one of the contenders for the title but was entangled in a marathon opening match against Dolehide to kick things off. When the Dane’s timing is off, she can be erratic, and errors quickly begin piling up on the stats sheet. Give me Kalinskaya with that plus money.
