Top seed Alexander Zverev faces 18th seed Tommy Paul in the Round of 16 at the Cincinnati Open. The match is scheduled for Wednesday, August 19th. This will be their first meeting of 2026. Zverev has reached the semifinals or better in Cincinnati at least four times. Paul had not gone beyond the fourth round in this tournament. Here’s our Alexander Zverev vs Tommy Paul prediction. This preview will include an Alexander Zverev vs Tommy Paul pick.

Alexander Zverev vs Tommy Paul Preview

Alexander Zverev is coming off a straight-sets win over France’s Terence Atmane in the last round. The German won a tight match in two tiebreak sets in two hours. Zverev trailed 1-3 in the opening set, but managed to retrieve the break and went on to win the breaker 7-4. There were no breaks in the second set, and Zverev prevailed once again in the tiebreak, sealing victory on his second match point.

Zverev hit 5 aces and committed 3 double faults in the victory. He landed 68% of first serves in play and won 85% of first serve points (44/52). Zverev won 60% of second serve points (15/25) and saved one of two break points on his serve. Zverev won the 2021 edition of the Cincinnati Open and has reached the semifinals in each of his last three visits.

Tommy Paul backed up his thrilling three-set victory over Hubert Hurkacz by knocking out World No. 70 Daniel Vallejo. But the American survived another three-set barnburner. Paul surprisingly lost the opening set 6-3 in 41 minutes and was a break down at the start of the second set. He managed to win six of the next seven games to level the match.

In the decider, Paul fell behind again, but recovered in the very next game to break back. He went on to secure a late decisive break and prevailed 6-4 in the third set. In the victory, Paul hit 7 aces and 3 double faults. Paul landed 62% of first serves in play and won 73% of first serve points (37/51). Paul won 42% of second serve points (13/31) and saved two of five break points in the match.

Alexander Zverev vs Tommy Paul Head-To-Head

Zverev and Paul have met three times. Paul holds a 2-1 lead. All three meetings were contested on hard courts. Zverev did win their last one at the 2025 Australian Open in four sets.

Alexander Zverev vs Tommy Paul Prediction

Paul could have been a perfect 3-0 had he beaten Zverev at last year’s Australian Open. He lost the first two sets in tiebreaks, which, on the balance of play, he should have won. That tells you how well Zverev can clutch it out under pressure, and this season, the German has been very consistent in that regard. That said, I still think this match has the makings for a proper three-setter. Paul is one of the elite movers on tour and can read big serves exceptionally well. He won’t have many opportunities to break, but he can chase down near-certain winners and keep asking Zverev to hit that extra shot. I’ll take the overs here.
