Former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka will play China's World No. 8 Qinwen Zheng in the first round of the 2024 Berlin Open. The match is scheduled for Tuesday, June 18, 2024. Here's our Naomi Osaka vs Qinwen Zheng prediction.
Naomi Osaka vs Qinwen Zheng Preview
Naomi Osaka returned to the grass courts for the first time since 2019. Despite grass being her least favorite surface, Osaka put on a solid showing in Den Bosch, where she defeated Elise Mertens and Suzan Lamens, dropping a combined ten games in two matches. In the quarterfinal of the Libema Open, she met Bianca Andreescu, a player on the comeback trail. Osaka came close to reaching the last four but lost to the Canadian in the final set tie-break.
Qinwen Zheng hasn't played since her shock third-round exit from Roland Garros at the start of June. The Chinese star started the year impressively. She was a finalist at the Australian Open (lost to Aryna Sabalenka), but her stellar run in Melbourne has not been replicated in her next tournaments on the WTA Tour. In fact, her best results after the year's first Grand Slam are two quarterfinal appearances in Dubai and Rome.
Naomi Osaka vs Qinwen Zheng Head-To-Head
• Osaka and Zheng are tied at 1-1 in their head-to-head.
• Zheng won their lone meeting of 2024 so far at the 2024 Italian Open in straight sets.
Naomi Osaka vs Qinwen Zheng Prediction
It's a clash between two of the best Asian players on tour. There's also a bit of grudge about the way Osaka's current coach, Wim Fisette, controversially terminated his contract for coaching Zheng last year in order to take up the offer presented by the four-time Grand Slam champion. But the Chinese player forgave him and showed why she did not miss him after beating Osaka in Rome last month. The surface change tips the scales in the Japanese player's favor. Zheng is inexperienced on grass, and unless she can start to win matches on a regular basis, then she might change my mind. I'll take the proven Osaka here.
