Number 11 seed Alex de Minaur will battle Alexei Popyrin in an all-Australian clash in the third round of the 2024 Monte Carlo Masters. This match will be played on Thursday, April 11, 2024. Here's our Alex de Minaur vs Alexei Popyrin prediction.
De Minaur stages comeback win in second round
Alex de Minaur's second-round win over Tallon Griekspoor strikingly contrasted with his one-sided victory over Stan Wawrinka. De Minuar conceded his first set at this tournament to the Dutchman after 35 minutes. But he was able to get under his skin midway through the second set when he broke Griekspoor twice in quick succession to take control of proceedings. After leveling for a one-set all, De Minaur continued to apply pressure behind his return and was rewarded two more breaks in the decider to prevail 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Popyrin stuns defending champion Rublev
Andrey Rublev was expected to stroll into the third round on his first match as defending champion, but he was in for the shock of his life. It was the resurgent Alexei Popyrin who picked his spots to come away with a 6-4, 6-4 win in just under two hours. The Australian took advantage of an off-color Rublev by hammering a total of 25 winners to just 15 unforced errors. Crucially, Popyrin saved five of six break points behind his big serve to cause the first big upset of this year's Monte Carlo Masters.
Alex de Minaur vs Alexei Popyrin Head-To-Head
The two Aussies have met on two occasions on tour. The head-to-head is tied at 1-1. Their last confrontation was at the 2021 Paris Masters. Popyrin won 6-0, 6-3.
Alex de Minaur vs Alexei Popyrin Prediction
It's been nearly three years since De Minaur and Popyrin shared the court, but we can expect plenty of attacking tennis in their third-round match in Monte Carlo. Popyrin excels on a faster court, but he is more than capable of masking his weakness on the clay as evident in his stunning win over Rublev. I expect the relentless defense of de Minaur to be a tad too good for the big-serving world no. 46 although it wouldn't surprise anyone if he manages to make things tighter than what the odds would suggest.
Nur’s Pick Alex de Minaur in three sets
