In this article we will formulate a Mexico vs South Africa prediction for this World Cup game on Thursday, June 11th at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Mexico. Let’s take a look at the prediction for this World Cup matchup.

Mexico Betting Preview

Mexico comes into the World Cup ranked 15th in the latest official FIFA rankings and they are coming off of a 5-1 win over Serbia in their last match. In that win, Mexico trailed 1-0 in the 19th minute, but they led 2-1 at halftime and they added three goals in the second half for the win. Mexico had 17 total shots, seven shots on goal, and they had 66% of the possession. Mexico got goals from Chavez, Jimenez, and Vasquez, while Gutierrez picked up the lone assist.

In the last World Cup, Mexico did not advance past the Group Stage, as they tied Poland 0-0, lost to Argentina 0-2, and defeated Saudi Arabia 2-1. Mexico has advanced past the Group Stage in eight of their last nine World Cups, but they have never made it past the Quarterfinals. Mexico did not have to play in the qualifying rounds, as they were automatically in the World Cup as co-hosts.

South Africa Betting Preview

South Africa comes into the World Cup ranked 60th in the latest official FIFA rankings and they are coming off of a 1-1 draw with Jamaica. In that draw, South Africa led 1-0 in the 32nd minute and held that lead for most of the match, but they allowed the tying goal in the third minute of stoppage time. South Africa has played three other friendlies in recent weeks: a 0-0 draw with Nicaragua, a 2-1 loss to Panama, and a 1-1 draw with Panama.

South Africa has qualified for the World Cup just three other times, which came in 1998, 2002, and 2010 (where they were the host country). They have never advanced out of the Group Stage, but did pick up a win against France in their third game. While South Africa doesn’t have a long history at the World Cup, they have one of the top moments in recent World Cup History, when they scored a brilliant goal to open the 2010 World Cup against Mexico. In qualifying for this World Cup, South Africa won their group with 18 points, which was one more point than Nigeria and Benin.

Mexico vs South Africa Prediction

Mexico comes into this matchup as the much higher ranked team and they are a pretty heavy favorite to start with a win. Mexico has won three matches in a row, but just one of their last five went over 2.5 goals. South Africa is just 0-2-3 in their last three matches overall and they have scored one goal or fewer in all five. These teams have met three times, with each side recording a win plus one draw. Both teams know how important getting at least one point in the first game of a World Cup is, so I expect a very defensive match from both sides. Take the under here.
