In that draw, South Africa led 1-0 in the 32nd minute and held that lead for most of the match, but they allowed the tying goal in the third minute of stoppage time. South Africa has played three other friendlies in recent weeks: a 0-0 draw with Nicaragua, a 2-1 loss to Panama, and a 1-1 draw with Panama. 

South Africa has qualified for the World Cup just three other times, which came in 1998, 2002, and 2010 (where they were the host country). They have never advanced out of the Group Stage, but did pick up a win against France in their third game. While South Africa doesn’t have a long history at the World Cup, they have one of the top moments in recent World Cup History, when they scored a brilliant goal to open the 2010 World Cup against Mexico. In qualifying for this World Cup, South Africa won their group with 18 points, which was one more point than Nigeria and Benin.
