The Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers will meet on Friday night in the opening game of a three‑game American League West series at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

Houston Astros Betting Preview

The Houston Astros enter Friday’s contest with a 46–49 overall record (3rd in the American League West) and a 23-25 mark on the road. The Houston Astros offense has been competitive this season. Houston has compiled 323 runs scored, 147 doubles (12th in MLB), a .241 team batting average and 126 home runs which ranks third in Major League Baseball.

The Astros arrive at this evening’s game in below average form. Houston has lost four of the team’s last seven games played this season, including a 12–11 loss to the Washington Nationals four days ago.

Houston will turn to right hander Hunter Brown in this contest. In six starts made this season, Brown has compiled a 1–0 win‑loss record, a 3.38 ERA, a 1.36 WHIP and 35 strikeouts, while allowing 23 hits and 17 walks in 29.1 innings pitched. Brown struggled in his most recent outing, allowing six earned runs across four innings pitched in the Tampa Bay Rays 10-8 defeat of the Houston Astros last week. Brown will look to bounce back from his recent inconsistency on the mound in tonight’s matchup with the Texas Rangers.

The Astros lineup features outfielder Yordan Alvarez and first baseman Christian Walker. Yordan Alvarez has compiled a .310 batting average (5th in MLB), 29 home runs (2nd in MLB), 67 RBIs and a 1.030 OPS which ranks second in Major League Baseball. Christian Walker has tallied 20 home runs (14th in MLB), 58 RBIs (19th in MLB) and a .790 OPS.

Texas Rangers Betting Preview

The Texas Rangers enter Friday night’s matchup with a 47–46 overall record (1st in the American League West) and a 22–21 mark at home. Texas has played subpar baseball recently, losing three of the team’s last five games, including a 13–1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels two days ago.

Texas will start right hander Cal Quantrill in today’s game. In four starts made this season, Quantrill has compiled a 3–1 record, a 3.35 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP, and 27 strikeouts, while allowing 35 hits and 12 walks in 40.1 innings pitched.

The Texas Rangers lineup features third baseman Josh Jung and outfielder Brandon Nimmo. Josh Jung enters this matchup with a .297 batting average (12th in MLB), 9 home runs, 23 doubles, 34 RBIs and an .810 OPS. Brandon Nimmo has amassed a .257 batting average, 9 home runs, 20 doubles, 30 walks, 31 RBIs and a .744 OPS.

Why the Houston Astros will win.

• Offensive upside. Yordan Alvarez and Chrisitan Walker anchor the Houston Astros lineup.

• Starting pitching. Hunter Brown has shown strong swing and miss ability despite inconsistent results this season.

• Motivation factor. Houston has lost four of the team’s last seven games.

Why the Texas Rangers will win.

• Starting pitching advantage. Cal Quantrill has compiled a 3-1 record and a 3.52 ERA across 40.1 innings pitched this season.

• Home field edge. Texas has played quality baseball at Globe Life Field this season.

• Offensive production. Josh Jung and Brandon Nimmo provide a strong core to the Rangers lineup.

Houston Astros vs. Texas Rangers Prediction

In my view, this matchup favors the Texas Rangers. Why? Texas starting pitcher Cal Quantrill has compiled a 3-1 record and a 3.52 ERA across 40.1 innings pitched this season, while Houston hurler Hunter Brown struggled in his most recent outing, allowing six earned runs across four innings pitched in the Tampa Bay Rays 10-8 defeat of the Houston Astros last week. With that said, I am backing the Texas Rangers on the moneyline in this game.
