Western Carolina Catamounts vs. North Carolina Tar Heels Prediction
I’m on North Carolina here. I think this is just a spot for Michael Malone to deliver a message to the boosters in game one of his tenure in Chapel Hill. There’s a lot of new pieces for Western Carolina to integrate here and the Dean Dome is not where you want to have to put in new pieces to learn the system and chemistry. I think UNC wins this one b y 30+ so I’ll back the Tar Heels.
Western Carolina Catamounts Recap
The Western Carolina Catamounts come into the 2026-27 season looking to keep the improvement going after a solid 2025-26 campaign, going 15-16 including a 10-8 mark in SoCon play. The Catamounts would get the 5-seed in the SoCon tournament, knocking off Mercer in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament before losing to East Tennessee State in the semifinals by a score of 69-67, ending their season. This is an extremely new look Western Carolina team with so much turnover from last year, but Malachi Brown comes over from Georgia State after logging 12.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3 assists for the Panthers last year and Isaiah Manning had 10.7 points and 3.9 rebounds for Sam Houston last season. Samuel Dada is the top returner for the Catamounts after putting up 6.6 points and 7.6 rebounds for the Catamounts at the center position last season. There are a lot of question marks for Western Carolina but the Catamounts also have the widest potential of results in an open SoCon this season.

North Carolina Tar Heels Recap
The North Carolina Tar Heels come into the 2026-27 season with a new look after going 24-9 overall, including a 12-6 mark in ACC play, finishing with the 5-seed in the ACC tournament. but UNC’s stay in the ACC tournament was short-lived, as the Tar Heels would bow out to Clemson in the quarterfinal. North Carolina would still get a 6-seed at the NCAA tournament, but would be upset in the first round by VCU in OT, ending their season and costing Hubert Davis his job. North Carolina would reach out to the NBA ranks, bringing in former Denver Nuggets coach Mike Malone to lead the Tar Heels into the future. This is a new look Tar Heels team for the Mike Malone era, losing pieces like Caleb Wilson, Henri Veesaar, Luka Bogovac and Seth Trimble. However, Terrence Brown was quite the get from Utah, logging 19.9 points and 3.8 assists per game for the Utes last season. Neoklis Avdalas transfers in from Virginia Tech after logging 12.1 points, 3.1 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game for the Hokies last season. Matt Able also comes over from NC State after logging 8.8 points and 3.4 rebounds for the Wolfpack last season. It’ll be interesting to see if Malone’s NBA experience can translate to the college level but the pieces are there for him to have success out of the gate.
