UTEP Miners Betting Preview

UTEP opened the season on a great run and maintained it (mostly) into February but it’s been a rough stretch since then. The Miners won 12 of their first 15 games, falling to only Utah Valley, San Jose State, and Louisville. A 5-4 run came next with wins over Liberty, FIU, Kennesaw State, New Mexico State, and FIU again mixed with losses to New Mexico State, Jacksonville State, Western Kentucky, and Middle Tennessee. Since then it’s been a series of losses though. Those defeats have come courtesy of Liberty, Kennesaw State, Jacksonville State, Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee, and Sam Houston. That gives UTEP a 17-13 overall run through 30 games so far this year.

In the Sam Houston road matchup on Thursday, the Miners opened the game with a 44-42 advantage. UTEP was outscored 47-43 the rest of the way however, leading to an 89-87 loss in the end. Tops in scoring was Devon Barnes, who came off the bench for 16 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Corey Camper added 15 points with four rebounds and three steals, while Ahamad Bynum posted 13 points with two rebounds in 22 minutes.

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs Betting Preview

Over on the LA Tech side, they were looking great in late December but they’ve hit some bumpy stretches since then. The Bulldogs won 11 of their first 13 outings, then hit a 2-4 run with wins over FIU and Liberty in between losses to UTEP, New Mexico State, Jacksonville State, and Kennesaw State. After wins over Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee, and Sam Houston, LA Tech hit a 3-5 record over the next eight. Those wins were over FIU, Middle Tennessee, and Sam Houston. Otherwise, it was losses to Liberty, Kennesaw State, Jacksonville State, Western Kentucky, and New Mexico State. In total, the Bulldogs have posted a 19-11 record across 30 games this year.

Matched up against New Mexico State at home on Thursday, the Bulldogs faced a 33-19 deficit going into the second half. LA Tech fought back with a 36-34 advantage but ended up losing in the end 67-55. Tops in scoring was Al Green with 13 points, four rebounds, and two assists. The only other player on the team to reach double-figures was Daniel Batcho, who notched a double-double on 12 points, 10 rebounds, and one assist in 35 minutes.

Why the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs will win

  • UTEP has lost each of its last six games against the Conference USA.
  • Louisiana Tech has won 11 of its last 13 day games at Thomas Assembly Center against non-AP-ranked opponents.
  • UTEP has lost the first half in five of its last six games at Thomas Assembly Center.

Why the UTEP Miners will win

  • Louisiana Tech has lost each of its last three games at Thomas Assembly Center.

UTEP vs Louisiana Tech Prediction

I’ll stick with LA Tech. The Bulldogs really need a convincing effort in this one, though. Louisiana Tech didn’t play well on offense in their latest home loss to New Mexico State, posting 33.3 percent shooting from the field and 21.4 percent (6-of-28) from outside. The 55 points were the Bulldogs’ lowest since hitting just 47 in a home loss to Kennesaw State on February 13.

LA Tech also took a loss the last time they played UTEP, falling 70-60 on the road on January 2. The Miners are riding a six-game losing streak themselves, but overall they’re still scoring pretty well. UTEP has 73 or more points in three straight, so LA Tech is going to have to get the offense going if they want to power out a win/cover in the rematch to get some revenge.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Louisiana Tech Bulldogs -4
