Monmouth Hawks Betting Preview

The Hawks’ season kicked off on a pretty rough run. In their first five games, Monmouth lost to Michigan State, Temple, Northern Illinois, Rutgers, and Wichita State. On Thursday against Youngstown State, the Hawks lost 72-62.

In Friday’s matchup with Stephen F. Austin, Monmouth held a 32-28 advantage at the break. The Hawks were outscored 44-35 in the second half however, resulting in a 72-67 defeat. Abdi Bashir topped the team in the losing effort with 30 points and two rebounds.

Presbyterian Blue Hose Betting Preview

Over on the Presbyterian side, they went 2-3 over their first five games with losses to Charlotte, NC State, and Kennesaw State alongside wins versus Carolina Christian and Wofford. On Thursday versus Stephen F. Austin, the Hose powered out a 58-55 victory.

Presbyterian played Youngstown State on Friday. In that one, the Hose held the Penguins to just 16 first-half points along the way to a 67-42 victory. Jonah Pierce led the team in scoring with 20 points and nine rebounds over 29 minutes of work.

Why the Presbyterian Blue Hose will win

  • Monmouth has lost each of its last eight games against non-conference opponents.
  • Presbyterian has won three of its last four games against non-AP-ranked opponents.

Why the Monmouth Hawks will win

  • Monmouth has won the first half in four of its last five day games played at neutral venues.

Monmouth vs Presbyterian Prediction

I’ll likely lean toward Presbyterian. The Hose had a good outing versus a struggling Youngstown State team on Friday, holding the Penguins to just 27.1 percent shooting from the field. Presbyterian managed 46.3 percent on their part, alongside a 35-32 rebounding edge. That said, the Hose haven’t been scoring all that well lately; they’ve hit fewer than 68 points in three straight games. They’ll need to hit the gas on offense here.

As for Monmouth, on Friday they had a pretty solid first half but couldn’t find too many options for scoring beyond Bashir’s big night. The Hawks haven’t gotten past 67 points in five of their seven games this year, so if Presbyterian can get it going on the scoreboard the Hose will be fine.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Presbyterian Blue Hose -2
