Memphis Tigers vs. Iowa State Cyclones Prediction
I’m on Iowa State in this one. The proximity makes this almost a home game for Iowa State and the Cyclone faithful travel well to begin with. This is just a tricky matchup for a Memphis team that always seems to live and die by the transfers they bring in and while Penny Hardaway is great as an underdog with Memphis, TJ Otzelberger is fantastic as a favorite with Iowa State and I look for the Cyclones to get the job done in this one. Give me the Cyclones.
Memphis Tigers Team Preview
The Memphis Tigers come into the 2026-27 season looking to leave 2025-26 in the rear view and move forward after a horrendous 13-19 season, including an 8-10 mark in American Conference play, their fewest wins in a season since 1999. Penny Hardaway did what he would normally do in this situation, overhaul the roster and the only returning Tiger that averages more than 20 MPG was Julius Thedford (8.4 PPG, 5 RPG). Tylik Weeks (19.7 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 2.3 APG) transfers in from Southern Miss, Brandin Cummings (12.5 PPG, 2.1 APG) comes over from Pitt and Jayden Reid (10.1 PPG, 5 APG) comes over from Northwestern, while Rihards Vavers (11.5 PPG, 4 RPG), Cornelious Williams (12.2 PPG, 9.3 RPG) and Luke Almodovar (14.1 PPG, 3.7 RPG) come from Washington State, North Alabama and SE MO State to give Penny some serious talent and depth throughout the roster. Only time will tell if that talent can gel and turn into a return to the NCAA tournament for one of the more distinguished programs to be left out in the cold last season.
Why the Memphis Tigers will win
- Memphis has won each of its last six Monday games.
- Iowa State has lost four of its last five night games.
- Memphis has won the first half in 10 of its last 13 night games against non-AP-ranked opponents at a neutral venue.
Iowa State Cyclones Recap
The Iowa State Cyclones come into the 2026-27 season hoping to build on the success of 2025-26, finishing the year at 29-8 overall including 12-6 in Big 12 conference play. The Cyclones would knock off Arizona State and Texas Tech in the Big 12 tournament before falling to Arizona in the semi-finals. The Cyclones would get a 2-seed at the NCAA tournament, knocking off Tennessee State and Kentucky before falling to Tennessee in the Sweet Sixteen. This will be a new look Iowa State team with a lot of last year’s faces gone, like Joshua Jefferson, Milan Momcilovic and Nate Heise, but in comes Jaquan Johnson (16.9 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 3.6 APG) from Bradley and Leon Bond III (11.9 PPG with 4.7 RPG) from Northern Iowa to fill the voids as well as Ryan Prather Jr. (15.7 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 3.6 APG) From Robert Morris to add some depth in the bench. TJ Otzelberger has the Cyclones running like a well oiled machine, but the ask is can he take the next step in the program to potentially cut down the nets in April?
Why the Iowa State Cyclones will win
- Iowa State has won each of its last 13 Monday night games against non-Conference opponents.
- Memphis has lost each of its last six night games.
- Memphis has lost the first half in each of its last nine games.
