Houston vs California Prediction

I’ll take a stab on Cal here. The Golden Bears didn’t have too many issues in their opener versus Adams State, taking a 29-point win in the end. Cal shot a smooth 61 percent from the field and 48 percent (11-of-23) from outside with just eight turnovers and a 40-34 rebounding edge. The Bears were a bit permissive on defense (44 percent shooting allowed) but that’s a small gripe. In game two California shot 49 percent from both the field and 3-point range (17-of-35) but coughed up 14 turnovers and got outmuscled on the boards 38-35. If the Bears don’t tighten up their ball control Sunday they’ll be in trouble.

As for Houston, they took care of business in their first and only game so far this year versus La Salle. The Cougars cruised to a blowout win on the strength of 54 percent shooting from the field, 36 percent (5-of-14) from behind the arc and a 47-32 rebounding advantage. Houston held the Explorers to just 25 percent shooting on defense but did get a little turnover-happy with 13 miscues. This game will be a significant uptick in competition and we’ll get to see what Houston is made of on a neutral court. Should be a fun matchup overall.

Houston Cougars Betting Preview

Last year the Cougars had a pretty good run. Houston went 30-7 overall with a 14-4 run in a tough Big 12. That would put the team behind only Arizona in the standings. The Cougars took out BYU and Kansas in the Big 12 Tournament before a championship game loss to Arizona. Houston would then beat Idaho and Texas A&M ahead of a Sweet Sixteen loss to Illinois in the NCAA Tournament, ending their campaign for good.

This year Houston has just one game in the bank. That one was a pretty easy 94-55 blowout win over La Salle on Monday at Fertitta Center in Houston. The Cougars were led by Dedan Thomas with 16 points, three rebounds and five assists. Houston’s Delrecco Gillespie put up 13 points, seven boards and two assists while Corey Hadnot managed 14 points and five assists in the winning effort for the Cougars.

California Golden Bears Betting Preview

Over on the Bears’ side, they have two games in the bag thus far, and both have been victories. First came a 115-86 win over Adams State on Monday at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley. Leading the way for Cal was Michael Cooper with 24 points, two assists and two rebounds in 22 minutes of work off the bench.

In game two versus Radford, things were a little closer but still a victory 84-70. California’s top scorer this time was Nojus Indrusaitis with 30 points, five rebounds and two assists. Michael Cooper added 16 points, three boards and three assists in 24 bench minutes as well.
