Hampton Pirates Betting Preview

It’s been a spotty year for Hampton thus far, but to their credit, the Pirates have been able to crawl back above the .500 mark in the record column. Hampton posted a 3-5 run over their first eight games, then beat North Carolina A&T, Apprentice School, Regent, Loyola MD, and Howard. A rough 2-7 run came next, featuring losses to Charleston, Elon, Campbell, William & Mary (twice), UNC Wilmington, and Northeastern. Since then, however, the Pirates have cleaned up their act on a 6-1 stretch with a lone loss to Monmouth. Otherwise, it was wins over Howard, Northeastern, Drexel, Hofstra, UNC Wilmington, and Stony Brook at that time. Overall through the first 29 games of the year that gives the Pirates a 16-13 record so far.

In the Stony Brook game on Monday, the Pirates held a 39-25 advantage by halftime. Hampton kept the pressure on from there with a 42-24 run and took the victory in the end 81-49. Leading the team in scoring was Daniel Johnson with 15 points, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals. George Beale added 12 points with one rebound while Wayne Bristol led the team off the bench with 12 points and 10 rebounds in 22 minutes of workout on the court.

Drexel Dragons Betting Preview

Over on the Dragons’ side, they’ve barely been able to keep their heads above the .500 mark so far this season during a choppy campaign. Drexel went 5-4 over their first nine outings, then hit a 5-2 run with wins over Penn, Albany, Howard, North Carolina A&T, and Stony Brook among losses to Penn State and Campbell. Since then the Dragons have beaten only Hofstra, Delaware, William & Mary, Delaware again, and Charleston. Otherwise, the losses have come versus Towson, Elon, Northeastern, Monmouth, Towson, UNC Wilmington, Hampton, and William & Mary in succession. That gives Drexel a 15-14 overall record through 29 games so far.

In the home matchup against Charleston on Saturday, the Dragons came out of the locker room facing a 30-21 advantage. Drexel kept the pace on a 34-34 run from there and took the victory in the end 64-55. Kobe MaGee led the team with 19 points, four rebounds, and two steals. Jason Drake added 12 points with six rebounds and three assists, while Cole Hargrove put up 11 points with four rebounds and two steals in 34 minutes on the floor.

Why the Drexel Dragons will win

  • Drexel has won six of its last seven night games against the Coastal Athletic Association at John A. Daskalakis Athletic Center.
  • Hampton has lost 10 of its last 11 Thursday road games against the Coastal Athletic Association.
  • Hampton has lost the first half in three of its last four night games against non-AP-ranked opponents.

Why the Hampton Pirates will win

  • Hampton has won each of its last five games against the Coastal Athletic Association.
  • Drexel has lost the first half in four of its last five night games against Conference opponents at John A. Daskalakis Athletic Center.

Hampton vs Drexel Prediction

I might take a stab at Drexel here, but you could make a case either way. The Dragons are coming off a nice game versus a pretty good Charleston team, shooting 43.4 percent from the field with 34 rebounds and 15 team assists in the win. Drexel held the Cougars to just 37 percent shooting on the other side and scored 13 points off 12 turnovers. The Dragons have won consecutive games now, but they’ve been below 65 points in three of the last four.

Back on February 13 when these teams last met, Drexel took a 63-58 road loss. The Dragons were pretty competitive overall in that one but did get out-rebounded 42-32 and hit just four of their 21 shots from 3-point range (19 percent). I’d like to see Drexel get more aggressive on the boards in this home rematch, and also take more than just five foul shots.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Drexel Dragons -5
