I’m on Indiana here. Eastern Illinois has had a tendency to get drilled in a lot of these early season buy game matchups and I think that remains the case in this game as well. The Hoosiers are still a solid team with some punch offensively, and I’m looking for the Hoosiers to start the season with a bang with a big win and cover in this one. Give me Indiana.

The Eastern Illinois Panthers come into the 2026-27 season looking to take another step forward after showing slight improvement in 2025-26, finishing the year at 13-20 overall, including 8-12 in Ohio Valley Conference Play, finishing with the 8-seed in the OVC Tournament. The Panthers would upset SIU Edwardsville in the First Round before losing to UT Martin in the quarterfinals, ending their season. It was yet another losing season for Marty Simmons with EIU and with the makeup of this year’s team, I’m not sure that changes. There’s a lot of loss from last year’s team with the top end changing but EIU would go out and get Tanner Vogel from the NAIA ranks as a 7-footer that averaged 11.4 points and 10 rebounds per game. Jaden Miller also logged 10.7 points, 8.3 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game for D-II East Central last season and Gavin Welch had 11 points and 2.9 rebounds for D-II Lake Erie last season. Only time will tell if EIU has enough talent to take that next step in 2026-27.

The Indiana Hoosiers come into the 2026-27 season looking to improve on a decent 2025-26 season, finishing the year at 18-14 overall, including a 9-11 mark in Big Ten conference play. The Hoosiers would get the 10-seed in the Big Ten tournament, but their stay would be short-lived as the Hoosiers would be taken down by Northwestern, ending their season. Darian DeVries loses some talent like Lamar Wilkerson, his son Tucker DeVries and Tayton Conerway but re-tooled the starting 5 with some solid pieces. Markus Burton comes in from Notre Dame after logging 18.5 points and 3.7 assists while Bryce Lindsay had 12.3 points and 2.1 assists for Villanova. Aiden Sherrell added 11.2 points and 6.2 rebounds for Alabama and Samet Yigitoglu had 10.7 points and 7.9 rebounds as a 7-2 center for SMU last season. Jaeden Mustaf is also a solid add from Georgia Tech after putting up 10.4 points and 4.3 rebounds with 2.4 assists per game for Georgia Tech last season. There’s some hope for Indiana to maybe be a 20-win team this season and for good reason, it’s just about executing.
