Saint John’s Red Storm Betting Preview

The Storm have done a great job record-wise this year, with only a handful of losses in the books. Saint John’s lost just two of their first seven games, dropping to Baylor and Georgia in that time. The Storm would win another half-dozen outings before a third loss to Creighton. After wins over Butler, Xavier, Villanova, Georgetown, Seton Hall, Xavier, Georgetown, Providence, Marquette, and UConn in succession, a fourth loss came against Villanova. Since then it’s been wins over Creighton, DePaul, and UConn in succession, giving the Red Storm a 24-4 overall run through the first 28 games of the year.

In the UConn matchup back on Sunday, the Red Storm came out of the gate with a 50-32 advantage in the first half. St. John’s was outscored 43-39 the rest of the way but held on for a sizable win 89-75 in the end. Leading the team in the home victory were Zuby Ejiofor (nine rebounds; six assists; three blocks) and Kadary Richmond (four assists; three rebounds), each with 18 points. RJ Luis added 14 points with five rebounds and two steals as well.

Butler Bulldogs Betting Preview

Over on the Butler side, they had a bad run going in December and January but aside from that they’ve done quite well. The Bulldogs had a 7-1 record in their first eight games before hitting a losing streak versus Houston, North Dakota State, Wisconsin, Marquette, UConn, Villanova, St. John’s, Providence, and Creighton. A 2-3 run came next with losses to UConn, Marquette and Georgetown. Since then it’s been a 4-1 stretch with a lone loss to Xavier amid wins over Seton Hall, Providence, Georgetown, and DePaul. In total that gives the Bulldogs a 13-14 overall run through 27 games so far this year.

Matched up against DePaul in their Saturday outing, the Bulldogs came out of the locker room with a 40-34 advantage. Butler kept it up from there on a 44-38 stretch and took the 84-72 road win. Topping the scorers was Pierre Brooks with 24 points, seven boards, and four assists. Jahmyl Telfort added 17 points with six boards and six assists in 38 minutes as well.

Why the Butler Bulldogs will win

  • Butler has won eight of its last 10 home games against St. John’s at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
  • St. John’s has lost four of its last five games at Hinkle Fieldhouse following a home win.

Why the St. John’s Red Storm will win

  • St. John’s has won 17 of its last 18 night games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
  • Butler has lost each of its last eight night games against Top 10 AP-ranked opponents.
  • Butler has lost the first half in 30 of its last 40 night games against AP-ranked opponents.

Saint John’s vs Butler Prediction

I’ll go with Butler here. The Bulldogs are on a pretty hot stretch right now, minus the loss to Xavier. Butler did great in their latest road win over DePaul, notching 51.7 percent shooting from the field with 38 rebounds and just four turnovers in a very disciplined game overall (eight total turnovers). The Bulldogs are 4-1 in their last five with 82 or more points in all four victories.

These teams last met up back on January 4 in a 70-62 home win for the Red Storm. Butler didn’t play their greatest but they were comparable on the boards (47-46) and held St. John’s to just 36.6 percent from the field and a miserable 1-of-21 from outside. The problem, however, was Butler’s whopping 21 turnovers for 19 Red Storm points. That was the difference in the game, so the Bulldogs will have to correct the mistakes (and shoot better) during this home rematch. Should be a great matchup.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Butler Bulldogs +7.5
