Marshall Thundering Herd Betting Preview
Marshall has had some pretty good runs in the record column this year—but also some pretty ugly ones. The Herd have struggled to keep their heads above .500 on the year. Marshall kicked things off on a 7-5 stretch with wins over Davis & Elkins, Southern Indiana, Bellarmine, South Carolina State, Morehead State, Ohio, and West Virginia Wesleyan. The losses otherwise were versus Toledo, Purdue, Western Kentucky, UNC Wilmington, and Wright State. It’s been a 4-4 run since then with losses to Southern Miss, Elon, Troy, and James Madison. The wins otherwise have been versus Texas State, James Madison, Georgia Southern, and Coastal Carolina, giving the Thundering Herd an 11-9 overall run through the first 19 games so far.
In the Coastal Carolina matchup over the weekend, the Herd came out of the break holding a 30-29 edge. Marshall kept it going in the second with a 47-35 stretch and powered out the victory 77-64 on the road. Obinna Anochili-Killen led the team on 23 points with four blocks and four rebounds. Dezayne Mingo added 18 points with eight rebounds and seven assists, while Jalen Speer had 16 points and two boards in 29 minutes of work.
Georgia State Panthers Betting Preview
Over on the Georgia State side, they came into the season with a decent run, but they’ve only been able to string together consecutive wins once since late November. The Panthers beat Ball State, Toccoa Falls, North Carolina Central, and Tulsa with losses otherwise versus Mississippi State, Jacksonville State, and Austin Peay during a 4-3 opening stretch. Losses to Kentucky, Kennesaw State, Charlotte, Auburn, Troy, Mercer, and South Alabama came next, then wins over Louisiana, Georgia Southern, and Coastal Carolina. Since then it’s been losses to Texas State and Arkansas State, giving the Panthers a 7-12 overall record this season.
Matched up against Arkansas State in their Saturday outing, the Panthers held a 44-19 deficit by halftime. Georgia State got better from there but didn’t make up any ground in an 85-59 blowout defeat. Leading the team in stats were Nick McMullen with 15 points and 12 rebounds, along with Cesare Edwards with 15 points and 10 boards for a pair of double-doubles. Jelani Hamilton chipped in 13 points with three rebounds and three assists as well.
Why the Georgia State Panthers will win
- The home team has won each of Georgia State’s last five games.
- Marshall has lost nine of its last 12 night games against Conference opponents.
Why the Marshall Thundering Herd will win
- Georgia State has lost seven of its last eight Thursday games.
- Marshall has won three of its last four games against the Sun Belt Conference.
Marshall vs Georgia State Prediction
I’ll lean toward Marshall here. The Herd posted a solid bounce-back effort in their latest game versus Coastal Carolina, notching 44.3 percent shooting, 38 rebounds, and 13 team assists alongside just six turnovers. It was a nice outcome after just 64 points in a road loss to James Madison. Marshall has 77 or more points in every win so far this year. If they can reach that threshold again here, the Herd will be in wonderful shape.
As for Georgia State, they had a nice run of scoring going themselves with 79 or more points in four straight games (a 3-1 stretch). The Panthers saw that streak implode with just 59 points in their latest loss, though. Still, I like this one to be a fairly high-scoring finish as Marshall gets it done. It’ll be a competitive game if the Panthers come to play.
