Butler Bulldogs Betting Preview

Butler got off to a nice start this year, then hit the proverbial skids starting in early December. The Bulldogs came out of the gate on a 7-1 stretch, with a lone loss to Austin Peay among wins versus Missouri State, Western Michigan, SMU, Merrimack, Northwestern, Mississippi State, and Eastern Illinois in that time. A lengthy losing streak began from there however, as Butler fell to Houston, North Dakota State, Wisconsin, Marquette, UConn, Villanova, St. John’s, Providence, and Creighton in succession over the next nine outings. The Bulldogs managed to stop the bleeding with a win over Seton Hall, giving them an 8-10 record overall this year.

In the Seton Hall matchup on Wednesday, Butler managed to post a 41-35 edge by halftime. The Bulldogs kept a good run going from there on a 42-41 stretch, eventually taking the win 82-77. Leading the team in scoring was Pierre Brooks, who scored 19 points, four rebounds, and four assists in 32 minutes. Kolby King chipped in 11 points with four rebounds, and Andre Screen was the top bench contributor with 16 points and five boards in 18 minutes of work.

UConn Huskies Betting Preview

Over on the UConn side, they had one rough stretch (on neutral courts) back in late November but have done well this season otherwise—outside of a 1-2 run in their latest trio, that is. The Huskies beat Sacred Heart, New Hampshire, Le Moyne, and East Texas A&M in their first four outings, then fell to Memphis, Colorado, and Dayton in the next three. A win streak ensued over Maryland Eastern Shore, Baylor, Texas, Gonzaga, Xavier, Butler, DePaul, and Providence. Since then, however, UConn is 1-2 with a win over Georgetown sandwiched between losses to Villanova and Creighton. The result has been a 13-5 stretch through 18 games so far.

Matched up against Creighton in their Saturday game, the Huskies faced a seven-point deficit by the break. UConn got better from there on a 35-33 run but eventually lost 68-63 in the end. Leading the team in scoring were Solo Ball (two rebounds) and Hassan Diarra (seven assists; six rebounds) each with 15 points. Jaylin Stewart added 14 points in the loss, while Aidan Mahaney had all the Huskies’ bench points (four) in 10 minutes of action.

Why the Connecticut Huskies will win

  • Connecticut has won each of its last 14 night games at XL Center.
  • Butler has lost eight of its last nine away games when playing with a rest advantage.
  • Connecticut has won the first half in each of its last six Tuesday home games against the Big East Conference.

Why the Butler Bulldogs will win

  • Connecticut has lost the first half in each of its last three home games against non-AP-ranked opponents.

Butler vs UConn Prediction

I’ll probably just stick with UConn here. The Huskies are coming off a pretty limp effort versus Creighton however, and they’re hard to trust as a result. UConn hit 44.8 percent from the field in that one but also gave up 47.9 percent on the other side along with a 28-25 rebounding deficit. It wasn’t a horrendous statistical performance outright; it was just not up to UConn’s standards. The Huskies have been below 69 points in three straight games (a 1-2 run) so it’d be nice to see them notch a decent total on Tuesday.

As for Butler, they did pretty well against a struggling Seton Hall team in their last outing, shooting 51 percent from the field with 31 rebounds. The Bulldogs have given up 70 or more points in 10 straight games though (a 1-9 run), so UConn should have plenty of room to put up some offense in this one.

Andrew Jett's Pick: UConn Huskies -12.5
