Baylor Bears Betting Preview
Baylor kicked off the season on a pretty shaky run against some tough teams, but to their credit, the Bears have straightened themselves out quite a bit lately. Baylor hit a 5-3 stretch in their first eight games, losing to Gonzaga, Tennessee, and UConn along the way. The wins otherwise were over Arkansas, Sam Houston, Tarleton State, St. John’s, and New Orleans. Since then it’s been a 5-1 stretch over the last half-dozen outings. Baylor has a lone loss to Iowa State in that time. Otherwise, it’s been victories over Abilene Christian, Norfolk State, Arlington Baptist, Utah, and Cincinnati in that time for a 10-4 overall record so far this year.
In the Cincinnati game their last time out, the Bears went into the second half holding a comfortable lead 35-20. Baylor hit a 33-28 run the rest of the way, taking the eventual win 68-48 in blowout fashion. Leading team scorers Norchad Omier (10 rebounds for a double-double) and VJ Edgecombe (four rebounds) each scored 18 points. Josh Ojianwuna added 10 points with seven rebounds, while Robert Wright accounted for all of the team’s bench points in the win, notching seven points, three rebounds and two assists in 28 minutes of work.
Arizona State Sun Devils Betting Preview
Over on the Arizona State side, they came out of the gate with a very nice run but things have been pretty choppy over the last five outings. The Sun Devils lost to only Gonzaga in their first nine games, otherwise taking out Idaho State, Santa Clara, Grand Canyon, St. Thomas-MN, Cal Poly, New Mexico, Saint Mary’s, and San Diego in that stretch. Since then it’s been a 2-3 run, however. Arizona State has wins over UMass and Colorado in that time, with losses versus Florida, BYU, and Kansas otherwise for a 10-4 overall record this season so far.
In the Kansas matchup back on Wednesday, the Sun Devils were looking pretty good on a 42-36 halftime edge. Arizona State was demolished in the second half however, falling behind on a 38-13 run for a 74-55 loss in the end. Leading team scorer Alston Mason finished with 19 points, three rebounds and three assists in 40 minutes of action. BJ Freeman was also in double figures during the losing effort, bagging 10 points and one assist in 32 minutes. ayden Quaintance added nine points and 11 boards with a pair of assists as well.
Why the Arizona State Sun Devils will win
- Arizona State has won 10 of its last 11 games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
- Baylor has lost the first half in three of its last four night games against Conference opponents.
Why the Baylor Bears will win
- Baylor has won each of its last eight Saturday night games.
- Arizona State has lost each of its last five night games against Conference opponents.
Baylor vs Arizona State Prediction
I’ll lean toward Baylor, but this should be a pretty great game overall. The Bears are fresh off a big win over a good Cincinnati team, shooting a nice 50 percent from the field with 9-of-11 (81.8 percent) from the line and a 29-27 rebounding edge. Baylor also posted 13 points off 15 Bearcats turnovers in that victory. The Bears are looking very good these days. Outside of the meager 55 points in the loss to Iowa State last weekend, Baylor has posted 81 or more points in four of five victories since December 9 (68 in the outlier).
As for Arizona State, they’re coming off a rough performance on the road against a very good Kansas squad. The Sun Devils shot just 35.8 percent from the field in that one with a 39-29 rebounding deficit and 18 turnovers. I like Arizona State to give Baylor a game here, but in the end, I think the Bears power one out.
