Auburn Tigers Betting Preview

The Tigers’ year kicked off on a nice run as they powered out wins in each of their first seven games. Auburn took out Vermont, Houston, Kent State, North Alabama, Iowa State, North Carolina, and Memphis during that time. The Tigers would take their first (and only, so far) loss to Duke 84-78 on December 4, but they won the next six games after that. Those victories came courtesy of Richmond, Ohio State, Georgia State, Purdue, Monmouth, and Missouri in succession. The result is a nice 13-1 overall record this year for the Tigers.

Matched up against Missouri on Saturday, the Tigers came out of halftime sporting a nice 45-33 edge. Auburn didn’t let up after the break, coasting on a 39-35 edge the rest of the way in an eventual win 84-68. Tops in scoring was Johni Broome with 24 points, seven boards, four blocks, and two assists. Chad Baker-Mazara added 13 points with three steals and three rebounds while leading bench scorer Chaney Johnson put up 13 points, seven boards, and two steals. Tahaad Pettiford chipped in with 10 points in 19 minutes of work as well

Texas Longhorns Betting Preview

Over on the Longhorns’ side, they lost their opening game versus Ohio State by eight points. Texas hit their stride after that though, taking a win streak versus Houston Christian, Chicago State, Mississippi Valley State, Syracuse, Saint Joseph’s, Delaware State, and NC State. Following another loss to UConn on December 8, Texas recovered with wins in their next four outings. Those came versus New Mexico State, Arkansas Pine Bluff, New Orleans, and Northwestern State. The Longhorns would fall in their next game versus Texas A&M, though.

Matched up against the Aggies on Saturday, Texas held strong in the first half with a 37-37 tie by the break. The Longhorns were blitzed 43-23 the rest of the way however, resulting in an 80-60 blowout defeat. Starter Tramon Mark topped the team with his 14 points and two assists in the losing effort. Arthur Kaluma added 13 points with seven rebounds, and Kadin Shedrick put up 10 rebounds. Jordan Pope chipped in with 12 points and two assists in the loss.

Why the Texas Longhorns will win

  • Texas has won each of its last six night games at Moody Center.

Why the Auburn Tigers will win

  • Auburn has won each of its last nine games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
  • Texas has lost each of its last six night games against Top 10 AP-ranked opponents.
  • Texas has lost the first half in each of its last four games against Top 10 AP-ranked opponents.

Auburn vs Texas Prediction

I’m just going to stay with Auburn here. The Tigers looked solid against a pretty good Missouri team in their last outing, notching a blistering 57.1 percent shooting with 47.6 percent (10-of-21) from outside and 18 team assists. Auburn did get out-rebounded 31-29 and coughed up 16 turnovers for 15 Missouri points, though. That said, it’s hard to argue against Auburn’s offensive capabilities—and thus their capacity to win pretty much any game. The Tigers have scored 74 or more points in every game so far this year, and they’ve got 84 or more in each of the last six—all victories.

As for Texas, they need a bounce-back effort here following a tough 20-point loss against Texas A&M. The Longhorns did well in the first half but faded from there on an eventual 34.6 percent shooting and 12 turnovers. Texas has fewer than 66 points in each of their last two losses, so if Auburn can keep a lid on the opposition scoring (and keep up the offense themselves) the Tigers should be good to go.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Auburn Tigers -9.5
