Alexander Zverev vs Yannick Hanfmann Preview
In his first match since becoming a Grand Slam champion for the first time, Alexander Zverev was pushed to the limits by Czech World No. 64 Vit Kopriva, but eventually sealed a three-set victory in two hours and 11 minutes. Zverev prevailed 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to pick up his 36th match win and extend his winning run to eight matches. In the victory, Zverev hit 16 aces and 1 double fault. He landed 71% of first serves in play and won 81% of first serve points (44/54). Zverev won 59% of second serve points (13/22) and saved one of two break points on his serve. Zverev has reached the semifinals in each of the last three years in Halle and is a two-time runner-up in this event.Yannick Hanfmann doesn’t have a great track record at the Halle Open, but savoured his moment at long last with a sensational win over Brazilian prodigy Joao Fonseca. Entering the match as a +220 underdog, Hanfmann dispatched Fonseca 6-2, 6-2 in just 67 minutes. It’s just the second time he’s won a match in this ATP 500 event on grass.
In the victory, Hanfmann fired 4 aces and 2 double faults. He landed 73% of first serves in play and won 88% of first serve points (28/32). Hanfmann won 42% of second serve points (5/12) and did not face a break point throughout the match.
Alexander Zverev vs Yannick Hanfmann Head-To-Head
Zverev and Hanfmann have met once at the ATP level. Zverev won a marathon match at the Munich Open eight years ago, coming from a set down to beat his compatriot 6-7, 6-4, 6-2. This will be their first meeting on grass courts. Zverev has reached the final of the Halle Open twice in his career and has at least reached the semis in each of the last three seasons. Hanfmann had never won a match in Halle before this week, but can now dream of a quarterfinal spot on home turf.
Alexander Zverev vs Yannick Hanfmann Prediction
Will this be Zverev’s year in Halle? The timing feels about right. He just won his first Grand Slam at Roland Garros and has reiterated his desire to end his drought on the lawns of Halle. While he hasn’t always found instant rhythm on grass throughout his career (50-24 lifetime record), his superior return and baseline consistency should allow him to gradually take control of this match. Hanfmann has never been comfortable on grass either. But having thumped Joao Fonseca 6-2, 6-2, he cannot be overlooked. That said, I’m taking Zverev to edge this in potentially three sets.
