The Titans were only able to go 5-7 over their first dozen games. The next quartet contained losses to Oklahoma State, SMU and UC Irvine. CSU Fullerton posted a 4-3 run over the next seven games, beating UC San Diego, Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State and Cal Poly. CSU Fullerton vs UC Irvine Prediction
I’ll lean toward UC Irvine. The Anteaters had an ugly second half in their loss to Cal Poly this week, eventually shooting just 37.1 percent from the field with a 43-37 rebounding disadvantage. UC Irvine’s most damaging stat, however, was the 17 turnovers in a sloppy overall game (the Mustangs had 21 turnovers of their own). The Anteaters have lost consecutive games now, but they’ve scored 73 or more points in four straight.
In the last meeting between these teams back on January 3, the Anteaters pulled off a nice blowout victory on the road 86-64. In that one UC Irvine shot an excellent 56.1 percent from the field with 45.8 percent (11-of-19) from outside while giving up just 32.8 percent on defense. UC Irvine had a 40-26 rebounding edge and a 40-12 advantage on points in the paint, but also hit just 57.9 percent (11-of-19) from the line and had 13 turnovers. This one may not be such a blowout, but the Anteaters should still be in the driver’s seat for the home rematch.
