California Golden Bears Betting Preview
The Bears have had a couple of pretty good runs this year, but overall they’re struggling in the win column. Cal kicked things off with a 6-1 record, then won just two games from November 27 to January 18. Those victories were over only Northwestern State and Virginia. A 4-2 run came in the next six games as the Bears lost to SMU and Syracuse among wins over NC State, Florida State, Miami, and NC State again. Since then it’s been a lone win over Boston College on March 1, surrounded by losses to Wake Forest, Duke, Georgia Tech, Stanford, SMU, Louisville, and Notre Dame. That gives the Bears a 13-18 overall record this year.
In the Notre Dame matchup on Saturday, the Bears came out of halftime with a 37-33 deficit. To their credit, California came back in the second to force overtime but eventually lost 112-110 in a tough road outcome. Jeremiah Wilkinson went off for 38 points, four assists, three rebounds, and two steals in the defeat, while Mady Sissoko doubled on 14 points with 13 rebounds and two assists in 44 minutes of work.
Virginia Tech Hokies Betting Preview
Over on the Virginia Tech side, they’ve been unable to string together more than two wins in a row for most of the year. The Hokies opened things up on a rough 5-8 stretch but then hit a 3-1 run in January with a lone loss to Stanford among wins over Miami, California, and NC State. Virginia Tech has beaten only Florida State, Virginia, Notre Dame, Miami, and Syracuse since then. Otherwise, it’s been losses to Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Clemson, SMU, Virginia, Boston College, Louisville, North Carolina, and Clemson. That gives the Hokies a 13-18 overall run through 31 games this year so far.
Matched up against Clemson on Saturday, the Hokies were down by 15 points heading into the second half. Virginia Tech was outscored 30-27 the rest of the way, resulting in a 65-47 loss. Tops in scoring was Brandon Rechsteiner with 11 points off the bench. Jaydon Young was the only other team player in double-figures with 10 points in 30 minutes on the floor.

California vs Virginia Tech Prediction
I’ll take a stab at California, but you could call this one either way. The Golden Bears are coming off a tough road loss to Notre Dame, giving up 50 percent shooting from the field with a 50-42 rebounding deficit and 10 turnovers for 12 Irish points. California has been on an ugly run lately, winning just one of their last eight games while giving up some pretty healthy points totals along the way.
These teams have met just once this year, in a 71-68 Virginia Tech road victory back on January 11. California shot a miserable 32.4 percent from the field in that one but made up for it with 18 points off 13 Hokies turnovers. The Bears won’t be able to rely so heavily on mistakes this time, so they’ve got to get that shooting percentage up. I think Cal has a pretty decent shot here if all goes well, but I’m staying away from this one.
