UNC Asheville Bulldogs Betting Preview

UNC Asheville didn’t start off the year so well, but they’ve been doing much better since early December. The Bulldogs took a 3-4 start in their first seven games, falling versus Alabama, Ohio, Central Arkansas, and George Mason in that time. UNC Asheville would beat St. Andrews, Bluefield, Western Carolina, North Florida, and Virginia Lynchburg in the next five before a 2-2 run that featured losses to UNC Wilmington and Longwood around wins over Columbia International and High Point. Since then it’s been a string of wins over Presbyterian, USC Upstate, Winthrop, Gardner-Webb, Charleston Southern, Radford, and Gardner-Webb ahead of a loss to High Point. That gives the Bulldogs a 17-7 overall record so far this year. 

In the High Point game over the weekend, UNC Asheville hit a 44-43 deficit in the first half. The Bulldogs fought back to force overtime, but ultimately took a tough loss on the road 104-100. Jordan Marsh was the leading team scorer with 33 points, three assists, four steals, and eight rebounds. Josh Banks added 20 points with four rebounds and two assists. Toyaz Solomon put up 17 points with seven rebounds and four blocks in the loss as well. 

USC Upstate Spartans Betting Preview

Over on the USC Upstate side, they managed a rough 4-8 run over their first 12 games this year. Those losses came versus NC State, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, UNC Wilmington, East Tennessee State, Queens U, Iowa, and Coastal Carolina. The Spartans have won just one game (over Presbyterian on January 8) since then. Otherwise, it’s been losses to South Carolina, South Carolina State, Youngstown State, Winthrop, Radford, UNC Asheville, Gardner-Webb, High Point, Longwood, Charleston Southern, Radford, Presbyterian, and Winthrop in succession. That gives the Spartans a rough 5-21 mark through their first 26 games. 

Matched up against Winthrop in their Saturday outing, the Spartans were down by three points at the break. USC Upstate was outscored 53-46 the rest of the way during a 105-95 defeat. Leading the team in scoring was Mister Dean with 21 points, three steals, and two rebounds. Carmelo Adkins managed to double up with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists as well.

UNC Asheville vs USC Upstate Prediction 

I’ll stay with the Bulldogs. UNC Asheville is coming off a tough loss to a good High Point squad in a road matchup, but they didn’t play terribly. The Bulldogs shot 45.8 percent from the field with a 45-33 rebounding deficit and surrendered 51.4 percent shooting on the other side, though. The 11 turnovers for 15 Panthers points didn’t help either. Still, UNC Asheville is scoring well these days with 72 or more points in three straight. 

These teams last saw each other in a very close game. That one was a 93-92 UNC Asheville home win back on January 15. The Bulldogs were very permissive on defense (56.3 percent shooting allowed) and got out-rebounded 38-36 in that narrow escape. UNC Asheville has plenty to clean up on both sides of the ball for the road rematch, but I think they’ll pull it off if all goes well.
