Troy Trojans Betting Preview

Troy has a couple of rough stretches in the books so far, but overall they’ve been pretty consistent. The Trojans kicked things off with a 5-4 stretch, beating Toledo, New Orleans, West Georgia, UTSA, and Eastern Kentucky in those nine outings. Troy would beat Middle Georgia State, LaGrange, Georgia State, App State, and Marshall in the next five before losses to Texas State, Arkansas State, and South Alabama (with a win over LA Monroe) from there. The last five have been wins over South Alabama, Southern Miss, Georgia Southern, and LA Monroe followed by a loss to James Madison. That gives Troy a 15-8 record through 23 games so far.

In the James Madison game on Wednesday, the Trojans were looking at a four-point deficit by halftime. Troy got a little better from there on a 33-32 stretch but still took a tough road loss 64-61 in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Tayton Conerway with 18 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Marcus Rigsby added 11 points with a pair of blocks as well.

Miami-Ohio RedHawks Betting Preview

Over on the Miami-OH side, they were a bit sketchy out of the gate this year but they’ve since cleaned up their act well. The RedHawks beat App State, Maryland Eastern Shore, Siena, Mercer, Air Force, and Bethany WV during a 6-4 opening run. Miami-Ohio has just one loss (on January 25 versus Akron) since then. Otherwise, it’s been a string of successive wins over Sacred Heart, Defiance, Buffalo, Ball State, Western Michigan, Northern Illinois, Kent State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Ohio, and Central Michigan. The result in the record column so far for the RedHawks is a 17-5 overall run through the first 22 games of the year.

Matched up against Central Michigan in their latest outing, the RedHawks held a modest three-point lead by halftime. Miami-OH hit a 39-36 run the rest of the way and powered out the eventual win 76-70 in the end. Peter Suder led the team with 21 points, four rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block. Luke Skaljac came off the bench for 13 points with two assists in 19 minutes, and Eian Elmer had 12 points with nine rebounds and a block in 37 minutes.

Why the Miami RedHawks will win

  • Miami (OH) has won each of its last 10 games at John D. Millett Hall.
  • Troy has lost three of its last four road day games against non-conference opponents.
  • Troy has lost the first half in three of its last four road games.

Why the Troy Trojans will win

  • Troy has won four of its last five games against non-AP-ranked opponents.

Troy vs Miami-Ohio Prediction

I’ll stay with Miami-Ohio. The RedHawks got past a middling Central Michigan team in a road matchup this past week, but there are a few spots to improve upon. Miami-OH shot a nice 49.1 percent from the field but also got out-rebounded 39-29 and hit a tepid 13-of-21 (61.9 percent) from the line. Still, it was a pretty nice offensive performance. Miami-Ohio has now hit 70 or more points in 12 straight games, going a stellar 11-1 in that time.

As for Troy, they were on a pretty good run ahead of the loss to JMU, hitting 70 or more points in three straight wins prior to that. This will be the second installment in a four-game road trip for the Trojans and it’ll be a tricky matchup. I like Troy to put up a good effort but ultimately fall short.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Miami-OH Redhawks -1.5
