Temple Owls Betting Preview

The Owls kicked off their season on a nice run, winning three straight. Those victories came courtesy of Sacred Heart, Monmouth, and Drexel in succession. Game four was Temple’s first loss, a close 72-69 affair versus Boston College.

In their Florida State matchup on Friday, Temple was down by six heading into the second half. The Owls didn’t end up recovering any ground and lost 78-69. Jamal Mashburn Jr. was tops in the losing effort with 20 points, and Zion Stanford put up 15 points.

UMass Minutemen Betting Preview

Over on the UMass side, they got off to a promising start versus New Hampshire with a 103-74 victory. The Minutemen have yet to record a win since, though. They’ve fallen to West Virginia, Louisiana Tech, and Hofstra in the last three.

Matched up against Hofstra last weekend, the Minutemen fought back from a five-point halftime deficit to force OT. UMass eventually lost 75-71, though. Jaylen Curry led the team in the losing effort with 22 points, six assists, and six rebounds. UMass will take on Florida State, Harvard, NJIT, Central Connecticut, and UMass Lowell after this one.

Why the Massachusetts Minutemen will win

  • Massachusetts has won five of its last six day games against non-conference opponents.
  • Temple has lost each of its last five Saturday games against non-conference opponents.
  • Massachusetts has won the first half in each of its last four games against the American Athletic Conference.

Why the Temple Owls will win

  • Massachusetts has lost four of its last five games.
  • Temple has won six of its last eight games played at neutral venues.

Temple vs UMass Prediction

I’ll probably end up sticking with Temple. You’ll certainly be able to make a case either way here, though. On Friday the Owls had a bad offensive evening, shooting just 39.3 percent from the field and 23.8 percent (5-of-21) from 3-point range alongside 14 turnovers against Florida State. Temple hasn’t reached 70 points in three straight games, so they’ll need to get moving quickly here and keep a consistent shooting rhythm for the whole game.

As for UMass, they posted a decent effort against an undefeated Hofstra team in their last appearance but ultimately fell short. The Minutemen have scored 66 or more points in all four games so far (69 or more in three of them) but they’ve also given up at least 74 points in all four games as well. I like this one to be a fairly high-scoring, competitive game if both teams are on point.

Andrew Jett's Pick: Temple Owls +1.5
