The Cardinals opened up the season with a couple of tough draws. The opener turned into a 31-0 blowout loss versus Purdue on the road, then came a 42-3 blowout defeat on the road versus Auburn. Ball State was able to power out a 34-29 win in game three versus New Hampshire, but then fell 31-25 in a tough outcome on the road versus UConn. In the loss to the Huskies, the Cardinals posted 404 yards (228 passing) with 19 first downs and 4-of-12 on third-down conversion attempts.
In their matchup with Ohio last weekend, the Cardinals were in trouble at halftime with a 14-0 deficit. Ball State turned it on from there however, hitting a 20-0 run in the second half for a 20-14 comeback home win. QB Kiael Kelly finished with 17-of-33 passing for 185 yards and a touchdown while also leading the rush on 21 carries for 96 yards and a touchdown. Leading the receivers was Qian Magwood with four grabs for 92 yards and a score in the win.
Over on the Western Michigan side, they got things started this year with a 23-6 loss versus Michigan State. The Broncos would then take a tough overtime loss versus North Texas in game two, then a 38-0 blowout road loss versus Illinois. Western Michigan finally got their first win over Toledo 14-13, then kept it going with a 47-14 win over Rhode Island. In that one the Broncos scored 28 points in the second quarter alone, holding the Rams to 251 yards, 16 first downs and 4.9 yards per play alongside four takeaways.
Matched up against UMass last weekend, the Broncos were down by a field goal at the end of the first quarter but that’s all the scoring they’d allow in an eventual win 21-3. QB Broc Lowry went 18-of-25 for 163 yards and two touchdowns in the victory, and also led the rushers with 15 carries for 92 yards and another score. Aveion Chenault was the team’s leading receiver in the win with two catches for 51 yards in total.
Heading into Week 7, Broc Lowry leads the Mid-American Conference for rushing touchdowns (6) this season.
Heading into Week 7, Nathan Voorhis leads the league for sacks (7.0) this season.
Western Michigan ranks 135th among FBS teams for Q1 points per game this season (0.5).
Western Michigan ranks 129th among FBS teams for yards per game this season (294.5).
Ball State ranks T132nd among FBS teams for Q1 opponent points per game this season (11.8).
Ball State ranks 132nd among FBS teams for passing yards per game this season (135.2).
I’ll go with Ball State, but this one could be argued either way. The Cardinals played fairly well in their win over Ohio last weekend, posting 357 total yards (185 passing), 4.8 yards per play, 20 first downs and 9-of-20 on third-down tries. Defensively Ball State gave up 356 yards and 7-of-14 on third-down tries, but the Bobcats’ eight penalties for 90 yards certainly helped as well. The Cards have now scored at least 20 points in three straight weeks—a nice total after scoring just three combined points in their first two (admittedly tough) matchups of the season.
As for WMU, they took care of a struggling UMass team pretty easily in their last outing but still lost a couple of fumbles and weren’t great on third downs (4-of-11). The Broncos defense has given up 14 or fewer points in three straight weeks, so this one will be interesting.
