Hailey Baptiste registered the biggest shock of the 2026 Madrid Open thanks to her incredible victory over World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. Baptiste stunned the defedning chapion 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 in a two and a half hour thriller. Baptiste saved a total of six match points, one of which was on the Sabalenka serve in the final set tiebreak. She won the final three points in the match to clinch her best-ever victory by ranking.

Baptiste won 38% of second serve points (19/50) and saved 11 of 17 break points on her serve. Baptiste is through to her first semifinal at WTA 1000 at the Madrid Open.
